Donating blood Empty Donating blood

Post by TrueBrit Mon May 27, 2013 2:45 pm

How does one go about donating blood lakeside? Do you know if they have the same rules as US? US introduced a new rule that stopped me donating because I spent too much time in UK in the 70's and 80's (when mad-cow disease was around), but I can still donate in UK.

From Cruz Roja Chapala website:

Mexico's Requirements for
Donating Blood

The basic requirements for donating blood in Mexico:

Be between 18 and 65 years old
Weigh at least 50 kilos
Never have had hepatitis or dengue or other blood diseases
No dental work in the past three (3) months
Not be on any medication
Not have consumed alcohol within 24 hours.
Know your blood type

The Blood Donor Coordinator is Norm Pifer 376-766-0616

TrueBrit, go to the Medical Dental section, and click on blood bank in GDL. a couple posts under that header shows list of approved donors @ Cruz Roja. If you are approved, Norm can add you to the list.

BTW, Donating blood in MX can be a PITA. One unit donation in MX. requires trip to GDL 1st for test then donation. The procedure is done in North GDL, and takes 4-6 hours including drive time.

It's a shame that they have the "no medications" requirement in there... probably restricts a lot of people who would otherwise qualify (like me).

Heather
think about it. if you are taking meds your blood is tainted and useless. could even be very dangerous and cause death. it's a good worldwide rule

We donated in the US. The blood centers had a list of meds that were restricted, and I'm not taking any of those. With all the blood that's donated (and used) in the US, it doesn't seem that they consider it useless... they certainly bugged me enough to give more. And I'm sure a lot of other blood they use was provided by people taking various medicines.

Maybe Mexico has less need for donated blood and can be more selective. Heaven knows, the drivers here are cautious and careful enough that they probably have very few wrecks where people require blood...

Thumbs up

Heather, Mexico has a great need for blood, plus they are extremely unbending of donor rule. Unlike NOB, you can't sell your blood, plus they don't do blood drives @ military or University locations.

I am on the same medications I took NOB, and I regularly donated blood there. Can't sell blood in Colorado either.
