We used to use Vonage, however when their modem failed there wasn't any local service available, so we switched to Easy Call 4 years ago, and even saved some money.

One of the local Sat guys might have info on Vonage.

You can do it all online - vonage.com
You can find out a lot of info there, and if you decide to order, they can ship the little Vonage router to you.

i am with vonage canada and have been since 2004. the router is starting to act up after 7 years. they are shipping a new one to our friend in canada who will then mail it to us here. they are not charging us anything because we are a long term customer. service from them has always been excellent.
we can call all over mexico at no extra charge, by the way. a call from chapala to san juan cosala is long distance with slim but not with vonage.

Just FYI for those that want to compare, We dropped Vonage US, as I was not willing to wait for replacement router to be shipped from Vonage to a friend to me in Mexico.

Easy Call Mexico, has local service and brings a replacement router to our home(Ours failed last year), reinstalls at no charge, normally service within 2 business days.

Unlimited calling US and Canada is 300 pesos per month, if you want 800 # it is 350 pesos per month.

Their contact #'s are....765-3932 or 1-877-446-0761

email: info@easycallmexico.com. We switched back in 2008 when our Vonage router failed. We have had one router issue since then with Easycall, and love local service.

I believe pricing between the 2 is comparable, and not sure who might be cheapest this week, LOL, and includes voicemail and calls in Mexico.

i can call over 60 countries[i called my cousin in germany just fer fun] and have an additional virtual phone # in toronto for my mother and friends there to call local. you couldn't pry me away from vonage with dynamite after being with them for 19 years.we had to maintain a canadian address-hence our friend getting the new router sent there. i think vonage is officially in mexico now in mexico city. but we are a canadian customer

GAWD Vonage sounds great again Pedro, since I only call Mx, Canada and US, how much does unlimited calling cost. EZ call costs me less than $23.00 month, w/unlimited calls, including local service, and no contract.

Please post Vonage costs Pedro, so everyone can compare and make an informed decision.

Contact Michael or Mario at Ajijic Electronics.

I pay $25.99 US plus taxes through these guys for Vonage. (Don't believe I have any bells and whistles extra services). My phone number is local to where the most of my US relations live so they can call me as a local call.
Talk to folks in Ireland, US, and Canada a lot, for the basic fee....don't know about other countries.

Pedro, can you explain how the virtual # works? Is your working # an Alberta or Toronto prefix?

a virtual # can only accept calls. so if you have a bunch of relatives in belfast, you will put a virtual there as if you were there and no long distance charge to the caller. your main number is mobile,so if i were in a hotel in hong kong, callers would be able to dial our alberta # as if we were in alberta. or the virtual as if we were in toronto.

I had Vonage. I gave it up and got a Magic Jack about 4 years ago. It costs me about $20 a year to make free calls to Canada and the US.
When I call other countries it is very inexpensive. I take it with me when I travel. I can call the US or Canada for free no matter where in the world I am.

Stupid question...can other people call you with your magic jack setup?

Edited to add...yeah it was a stupid question, I shoulda looked it up first.
Here's a good comparison between the two...I'll stick with Vonage.

It's a pretty rambling comparison, and in the end fails to justify either option. It's out-and-out wrong about Magic Jack quality being "choppy"; it's as good as Vonage, if you'd like to use that as the "standard", when set up properly. With MagicJack Plus, it sets itself up properly. Both devices are equally dependent on the quality of the Internet service. If Vonage is less picky about its speed requirement (even though Customer Service will routinely tell you it needs a minimum of 90 mbps every time), well, for the difference in price... it oughta be.

The article starts out by saying that MJ has a proprietary ATA, and Vonage doesn't. Baloney: they are both proprietary.

Over and over again the article says the Vonage box is free, but if you go to a retail store, it's $40.

"The magicJack VoIP adapter features an onboard computer that requires software installation on the consumer's computer." Red herring. So what? A five-minute job. For the immense difference in yearly cost, this is not a negative.

It states "Original flavor magicJack requires the magicJack ATA to be plugged directly into the computer", right after stating that the MJPlus does not need to be plugged in directly. Well, another red herring... the original MJ was a good start, and why would you buy one now when the Plus is out there?

"Vonage VoIP service does not require a specific computer OS or a USB port." Very true. Again, so what?

I could go on. Basically, this report tries to make it sound like tiny little things are bigger than they are, and worthy of your consideration... when they are not. The one major thing they got right: MJ customer service sucks. But then, when there is actually a website called wehatevonage.com, who's zooming who?

I use MJ, not even the Plus, have for years. I like the onscreen Contact list. Quality is never a problem. For the vast difference in price, I'll stick with it.

Vonnage phone Empty A (better) alternative to Vonage

Post by Riverman Fri Jun 07, 2013 10:32 am

We are using a VOIP system called Nettalk it is a big improvement over MJ and doesn't require the computer to be active to make or receive calls.
There is even a nettalk that uses WiFi.

Not sure if they are available in MX but Nob they are available in Walmart everywhere.

If you buy in the US you get a US number and a Canadian number if you buy in Canada.

I paid $49.00 for the 1st year and renewal is less.

IMHO it's a great system, your mileage may vary.

We had Vonage but it kept going up and up in price to about $29.00 a month. So we changed to Magic Jack Plus. Much better reception and $19.00 a year. Much better deal.
