Booster

I have been advised to get a booster for my modem. Where would the best place to purchase this and are they pretty standard? While I do not wish to spend much money for this, I do not want to buy something which I will be unh.appy with. TIA for your help.

Never heard of a booster did they mean a repeater? My repeater plugs into wall electrical plug and picks up Telmex modem WIFI signal and re-broadcasts it in the room the repeater is located. It takes a little bit of speed away but works. Telmex sometimes has them I have heard. I bought mine at Fry's in the US. Not sure where to get one here.

There are several ways to boost your wifi signal.

Many are receivers of existing signal that then re-broadcast the signal - no changes to configuration at sender side or receiver side
- they are sometimes called repeaters

Then there are ones that receive your wifi signal, stuff it onto your electrical wiring and a "receiving" box gets the signal from the electrical and re-braodcast the wifi in that area of a house.
- Thios only works if the electrical plugs of the encoder and the decoder/broadcaster are on the same phase (one of the 120v sides of possibly two sides in a house (many here in MX only have one side (120 v). You might need an electrician or somone familiar with house wiring to assist you.

You must be on the same phase as VT said for signal over house wiring but mexico has  three phase in street generally  at 127 volts plus or minus 10%.  Look up at the four wires stacked vertically on street (note no covering of wires yikes!) one is ground others are the three phase.  Horizontal wires at top of poles are high voltage which feed transformers which feed the vertical house voltage wiring.  You can have one two or three phase in your house here.  Three phase north of the border is a more industrial wiring.  I have three phases coming into my current house. Another local habit is one phase will drop so switching to another phase may keep your fridge going. Good idea to have a voltage gauge here but dimming lights can tell you somebody is welding in the neighborhood for example. I forgot about the over the AC wiring repeaters.  Never did have good luck with that technology but others may have better luck.  They also had boxes that used old phone wiring but bell wire is not such a good idea with todays signals.

DO not waste your time with WIfi Repeaters! They slow down your WiFi HORRIBLY !

Instead go to Telmex and See if they still have the TP-Link powerline adapter with Wifi.

They cost 600 pesos or so in Telmex and twice the price elsewhere

I have a bunch (like 6) of TP link powerline adaptors for sale used once, bought a bunch but have 3 meters so lines didnt carry signal.

WHat makes models, and quantities have you? Are they from Telmex?

Mine are from the USA, bought there will have to check tomorrow brands, they were like 120US new a year ago.  I have like 6 to 8.  D-Link AV 500 sounds familiar.

Repeaters vary in quality. A good one will only lose you about 10%. This is my number as I compared equal signal strength between repeated WIFI and Original signal WIFI.  Not quite horrible but a hit none the less. Key is to not make the repeater do too much. Worked best putting repeater half way between original WiFI signal and WIFI computer using repeated signal. Play Play Play

I have a Belkin wireless G router, is it OK to use with a wireless modem or is it only good with something else, such as the Telecable internet connection? Don't want to harm any equipment here/

am a bit confused. zed suggested i buy a modem/router with external antennas on the telmex modem forum, , but tekno suggested these plug in adapters. which would be best bet ? also as i am going to america in a few days are they cheaper there or much the same here ? thanks
