Cachaça Available Here?
Just heard about this liquor on the BBC news. Apparently it is to Brazilians what Tequila is to Mexicans. Distilled from sugar cane and sounds yummy enough I have to try it. Anyone seen it available around here?

Yep, I bought two bottles in Patzcuaro. They make it around there too. Tastes just like dark sugar cane rum.

Rum is usually made from molasses and scummings, a by product of sugar cane.CanuckBob wrote:Yep, I bought two bottles in Patzcuaro. They make it around there too. Tastes just like dark sugar cane rum.

Yes that's why what you were drinking WAS rum, because it is rum that's made around Patzcuaro from scummings but it's not Cachaça that's made in Brazil from "Fresh" sugar cane.CanuckBob wrote:I guess that's why it tastes like dark sugar cane rum then........
¿comprender?

Guyanan Demarara Rum is darker and is made from molassesas does Jamaica, Antigua distills its rum from sugar cane as does Barbados and a number of islands. But it is still rum. The Brazillian product is probably a rum with another name.
My dictionary calls it "white lightening".

Yes but after processing. Molasses is a by-product of the process to remove sugar from sugar cane. There is quite a diffence in the rum distilled from moplasses and the rum distilled from sugar cane before it is processed.HelperGuy wrote:And of course that molasses is a by-product of... sugar cane.

Well, I was still wondering if anyone has been able to purchase it here? The BBC article stated that it is the world's third largest consumed alcoholic beverage but that only 3% of the Brazilian production was currently being exported. Must be a lot of drunk Brazilians down there!

As a very long time rum drinker with a fair amount of experience with various rums, I was given a bottle of:

I do prefer light rums or light dark rums but this has a very odd taste to me. It will take a fair amount of time for this bottle to be consumed.

cachaxa or rot gut also known as pox in Chiapas...nothing to do with a nice rhum agricole from the Antilles. When you have to add sugar to a cocktail, it is not a good sign..

In Brazil, a beverage known as cachaça or pinga, considered distinct from traditional aguardiente, is made from sugarcane. Cachaça, like rum, has two varieties: unaged (white) and aged (gold).

rotgut can come from a whole bunch of different products and be aged or not aged,
Have you tasted the stuff, it is awful, so it is sugarcane rot gut still awful no comparaison with a rhum agricole that can be so wonderful.
It sounds like the only person who has experienced the stuff is Chinagringo. it takes more than google to know if something is worth trying or not.
As China says the bottle will last a long time, this kind of spirit is made to get drunk fast and all the other added niceties come later to make it look legit and to sell it to gullible foreigners.it is all about marketing but lousy stuff is lousy no matter what the ads say.
In San Cristobal we have POX same deal...now we have a poxeria that have tasting of the stuff so the younger crowd goes in there for tastings and raves about it until they pass out, It is the equivalent of a one block mescal. Drink it walk one block and pass out. The only thing better than a one block mescal is a half a block mescal.

There's rot gut and there's not. I doubt it's anything like the cane liquor they sell here in plastic bottles
Re: Cachaça Available Here?
My husband was raised in Brasil and we have found it at the Paz liquor stores. One is just east of Superlake and one is in Jocotepec as you enter town from the east.

Re: Cachaça Available Here?
I really hope that no one took my comments to infer that this particular liquor tasted horrible. It is more that I prefer a different taste. For comparison, there are those who happen to prefer "blanco tequila" while my particular taste wanders towards reposado or anejo. Maybe one could compare to T-Bone vs Ribeye vs NY Strip? It is all individual tastes and preferences!
Besides, I hate Scotch!
