Need to know NOW!!!
I have two Mexican plated cars in my name.
I friend wants to get a car from here but he won't be down for 2-weeks. I found the perfect Mexican plated car but the owner is leaving in 5-days.
Can I buy the car and put it in his name?
Can I buy the car and put it in my name w/o problems?
Thanks.

This is what I have seen :
You can buy the car, get the factura and other papers, and put it under your friend's name when he comes in 2 weeks, it does not necessarily have to be put under a name right away.
You can send a copy of the name change on the registration document to the previous owner just for peace of mind.

Re: Need to know NOW!!!
The owner needs to sign off on the original factura (in an exact manner) and you need to ensure the car is free of liens and outstanding traffic infractions. I would do the transaction at the motor vehicle branch and put it into your name until your friend gets here.
Re: Need to know NOW!!!
Buy the car and complete the transaction where you would normally get plates. Have them check the documents for completeness and legally. Then give the seller his money. Be sure the owner signs off in a manner acceptable to the government. Wait for you friend to arrive and give him the completed papers to take to have the vehicle put in his name.

Re: Need to know NOW!!!
OK, I'll do as suggested about doing it at morot vehicles.
I was told the owner just has to sign off (no witness or notary) on the factura, but I wouldn't feel comfortable about doing it that way since if there is an issue, the owner is gone NOB.
I'm also told it's no problem for me to have multiple cars in my name; I just don't want the government to think I'm selling cars.
Thanks everyone.

Have the owner go to the motor vehicle dept. with you, get the paperwork done and then pay him.

Don't register it in your name at the time of purchase. If they ask why, just tell them it is being bought for a friend not at present at this time.
