South Korea's Kia to invest $1 billion in Mexico

Another big score for Mexico.

It sure is,one of my brother-in-laws just got a job at the new Mazda factory in Salamanca,Guanajuato.

What sort of wages are these guys paying?

It depends,I think my brother-in-law is getting about 9 or 10 thousand per month,not much, but better than what he was making at the new Dal Tile plant he was working at in Salamanca.

Wages depend on what skills you bring to the table. For example, a person who knows about automatic transmissions will get more than a tire guy.

FYI Kia and Hyundai are the same company.

Mexico seems to be attaining a good reputation for developing workers skilled in the automotive industry.  I'm sure other factors are going into this blooming of the new "Detroit of the south". Jobs, education, training are the things that make the world (and Mexico) a better place.
Now if the Americans would just stop buying our illegal drugs.

The main reason is cheap labor.

Labor is cheaper in China. Mexico has enjoyed a reputation for quality work in the auto industry for some time now. A few years back, Fords built in Mexico had one of the highest build quality scores in the world.

Not just cheap labor, location. It costs a lot to ship a car from China.

The higher the oil price goes, the better advantage that MX has on anything that is large or heavy.

I have no idea just how many iPhones you can put in the same cubic area as a car, but a lot.

Absolutely....Mexico has been  pumping out vehicles for a long time. Plants up around Saltillo and Toluca have been there for years.
And labor is cheaper anywhere in Central America....could it be our unstable government?  
If you read all the negativity, especially on TOB, were lucky to have even a tortilleria.

I think it's because this is the ideal location for chronic Mexico bashers approaching terminality.
But remember some of them are carpetbaggers opining from afar. Never would have guessed that so many ordinary people on the street would know how the profits from the drug business is divided up.

Calling the foreign denizens of the area "ordinary" is offensive to ordinary people.

Let me rephrase my statement, your Honor....
"ordinary foreign denizens (sometimes, AKA Tejanos)....and they probably aren't on the street.

My impression is that the most negative people about Mexico on TOB don't live in this area at all and at least one lives in Mexico City.

You have never been  more correct.....Mexico City, and one, from some place called paradise, so unquestionably, this has to be hell.
Most of them don't come over here....because they would be...shredded (for lack of a better word)

The one who lives in Mexico City really stepped in it yesterday,IMO,the tejano trio are a real piece of work as well.
