I've got friends coming for a couple of weeks in Feb. they'd like to spend 5-7 days or so at the beach. Any recommendations for a resort at Puerto Vallarta or Maleque areas? They will be driving from Chapala. They'll be wanting 4 or 5 star accommodation. Thanks.

3.5 hr drive ...
nowhere near as expensive as PV
accommodations to suit everyone... Beer

Depends on what they are looking for, check trip advisor, tons of reviews and lots of options to narrow down their wants. If you go directly to the hotel website after you find which place you'd like to stay, you can often times get better prices.

If they want a 5 Star experience and a beautiful location(but expensive) try the Four Seasons at Punta Mita, Nayarit.

Now that's book rate. Nobody but fools/rich person pay book rate unless they are full all the time. Mayan Riviera on Yucatan coast had a two bedroom Book was 895 a night. We got it for a week from RCI for about the same as a day bookrate. Lots of ways to beat book rate.

Two years ago I stayed there for I believe around $525/night which included a wonderful breakfast. The room was like a little casita with an ocean view...very luxurious! So I pampered myself and had a great time.

Picking our son up at PV Aeropuerto one day, we were running late and decided to spend the night.

Holiday Inn wanted $140us...

I went into their computer room, got onto the net, used hotel.com and booked a room there for the evening...

I walked back to the Front Desk, said I had a reservation, got the room for $90us Very Happy

Then went to the bar and blew the extra $50.... Beer

Hands down best resort food yet! I like it better than Rui Jalisco, which is my favorite grounds between the 3 Rui's, and it took only 3 1/2 hours vs the longer drive to PV.

I did I used RCI of which we are a Member.  Not sure if you have to have a rental to trade to join. Not as useful as it use to be as most places are All Enclusive which is a turn off for us and we probably won't pay for another membership and just use the Internet. We got a week just outside Disneyworld for a week at a two bedroom condo $625USD using RCI. We do get reservations six month ahead. We are also not afraid to call up and ask if they can give us a better rate or
ask them how to get a good rate.  I don't mind going to the west coast during Hurricaine season just so you look at the weather to check for a storm and if yes you come home. Be creative. RCI is a pain in the a** about calling I will warn you about that.
