6.5 Earthquake in Las Choapas, Veracruz this morning

Is it my imagination or are earthquakes coming more frequently in more areas? Or are we just getting better reporting?

Well, actually, Kippy, the Veracruz earthquake which was actually centered adjacent to the Chiapas border in the southern part of that state, may be a poor example of the frequency of eartquakes in this region (meaning Southern Mexico). Just the other day, Dawg read in the Chiapas daily Cuarto Poder, that temblors are on the increase in Mexico with over 900 in the first quarter of this year, about 1/3 of which occurred here in Chiapas mostly on the Pacific coast. Chiapas is the most active earthquake zone in the country. Normally, here in the highlands and especially on the hilltop where we live, we don´t feel these quakes as we probably would if we lived on the coastal plain near Tapachula but this one we felt. We may even have had some minor, almost indiscernable property damage.

Soon we will leave for the summer at Lake Chapala so if the big one hits here in June we won´t be around to report on that phenomenon to the Mississippi contingent hereabouts. Sorry, but it rains too much and turns chilly and floods in the high Sierra in Chiapas during the summer rainy season so we are heading to Lakeside until next winter´s dry season.
