Rain Riviera Alta Empty Rain Riviera Alta

Post by juanrey Thu Sep 17, 2015 10:16 am

Well we certainly got more than the 1.45" that Chapala Weather is reporting.
Riviera Alta sits right behind La Floresta going up the mountain.  There's a little church that is on the top street in La Floresta that borders Lazaro Cardenas right in front of Riviera Alta.  There's a little gate that used to be a passageway between La Floresta and all the condos and houses that are up behind it (Los Olivos and several others plus a number of independent homes).  Well last year sometime the La Floresta folks had the gate at the passageway welded shut in an attempt to eliminate breakins in their area.  This resulted in all the workers and homeowners who get around on foot to now walk all the way up Revolucion and down Lazaro Cardenas everyday extending their walk by at least 1.5km.
Today, after last night's rain the welding up of the passageway took it's toll.  The arroyo north of Lazaro Cardenas overflowed spilling a torrent of water, rocks and mud down to where Lazaro C and Revolucion meet creating a log jamb of boulders and mud, making the road impassable.  The waterflow running east down Lazaro Cardenas met up with another torrent coming down another arroyo and flooded the area in front of the passageway gate (which was covered in debri).  The water continued to build up rising to approximately 1 meter before the back wall behind the church gave way which released all the accumulated water breaking out the windows in the lower level of the church and flooding the lower level of the church.
Right now residents of Los Olivos and Riviera Alta plus all the independent casas are unable to get out until the debris at the top of Revolucion is removed.
Really a mess.

The weather is so localized here that the Chapala Weather site is really only useful to anyone within maybe a 1 km radius of that measuring equipment. We got at least 3 inches here in Ajijic centro.

chapalaweather.net has been down since 3:00am so any rain falling after that is not recorded. Apparently Telmex is the problem

I also noticed the dams have been opened again. The middle of the lake was filled with lirio this morning and the water was noticeably higher.

This morning, the lirio along the shore appears to have been the dumping ground for every kind of debris generated by the holiday crowds. Apparently, using the waste containers isn't as much fun. Twisted Evil

Too true. A lot of debris also gets washed down the river when they open the dams.

Terrible for them. What makes it worse is knowing it was caused due to LA Floresta deciding to weld the gate shut which cutoff the arroyo. If the arroyo had been allowed to flow the church would have been untouched. Doubtful if they have any recourse but it was LF s fault.

The Davis equipment at the weather site is battery powered so will continue to record even if the CFE is down and continues to record if Telmex is down, the information is just not uploaded to the site until Telmex comes back on, so what is posted is the total.

I am aware of this but nearly all the comments were made before the site went back online sometime yesterday afternoon when Telmex internet came back on. Up to that time the web site was showing the accumulation at 3:00am, hence my comments.

If you look at the daily file for yesterday the majority of rain fell before 3am, but the final .01" fell at 10:40am, so it's all there.
