I suppose it's good for the local business owners, but for some reason having a bunch of tourists gawking at the ceremonies in a panteon doesn't seem quite right, just my opinion.

I agree. I am going to spend the Day de los Muertos with a friend from Zinacantan who just lost a niece and I cannot imagine going there with a camera..Tourism in the various states is using the the indigenous traditions to attract the tourists but the indigenous themselves do not benefit, it is pretty sad, The hotels and restaurants benefits but in many communities here there is no benefit for the ones whose customs are exploited..

When we lived in San Miguel de Allende, nobody outside the family or those they invited were allowed through the gates of their Panteon. It's for family, not for picture snapping tourists wanting an "experience". I agree.

I understand the attraction of going to see the altars, but it really is a day for families and friends to pay their respects to the deceased.

Brigitte.....
In Ireland, the city of Derry holds what is said to be the largest celebration of Halloween, of any city in the world....they go all out.
The Catholic church in Ireland does not frown upon celebrating Halloween like some of the hierarchy of the church does here in Mexico. They accept it for what it is, a tradition that goes back thousands of years.
The Milesians, forerunners of the Celts, who settled in Ireland, were from Spain, but what traditions they left behind in Spain, I don't know.
There are Celts in Brittany also, but I don't know their traditions, either.

Interesting that the church is ok with it. I am not sure what is the history is France..the people from Britany were very religious but I do not remember ever hearing anything about Halloween in Britany. Maybe someone from that area would know, I sure do not know.
Did the Milesians live in Galicia and settle in Ireland or did some other group of Celts go down to that area of Spain at a later period? Fascinating how people would end up in the strangest places.

All I remember about Brittany is that the collaborators there, down around Nantes, didn't surrender until after the Germans had in Berlin.....tough bunch, huh?   lol!

Thanks to all of you people, this turned into a really interesting thread instead of just a white-face makeup hunt, not that there's anything wrong with that. I already knew a lot what's been posted here, but learned a bunch of new stuff, too, so gracias!

I remember as a kid that the old people in the country would leave a light on as it was the night spirits and mostly bad on could visit, the superstitious people also would have the locks up side down to fool the witched but we it was not a holliday per say.

Love the bit about the upside-down lock.

I guess the French evil spirits or the witches have not invented the thread to cut the butter..
