Re: want to buy new computer
obviously will be in spanish and key board, however do your homework with prices/ models beforehand as many of the so called buen fin offers are not so good and is an opportunity to get rid of told stock..

Recomendation if you are buying a new computer.
Try to make sure you choose one that has a factory Win10 installed as the original system and not one that offers a "free win10 upgrade"
A clean install will give you far fewer issues.

Many MS computers are one language only now. Keyboard is an issue if you are a fast touch typer for example no :; under your right little finger.

I just ordered all of the components from Amazon.com & had them shipped to Laredo for pickup. Looking forward to building my own desktop again. No more laptops for me.

Re: want to buy new computer
I have 3 yr old Dell desktop computer with windows 7, I think.
I am coming to Lake Chapala soon. Would it make more sense to buy a new laptop in US and bring it with me. I use my PC for internet, email etc, no movie streaming. I bought6 the Dell at Best Buy and have their GEEK Squad support, soon to expire, with WEBROOT antivirus program. I am not good at computer stuff. Could use advice from folks who know computers. I have an HP wireless printer, will that work with laptop?
Thanks, Bill

Buy your computer in the US. Especially if you choose a laptop. Can't buy a computer here with an English keyboard. In fact, as far as I know, you can't buy a new English keyboard here for a desktop. Yes, your printer will work with a laptop. There are a couple of very competent computer geeks lakeside.

If you are just surfing the internet and doing emails I would recommend a tablet such as an IPad or Samsung Galaxy. Super simple and you can take it everywhere. Your printer would have to be WiFi or Bluetooth capable though as most tablets don't have a USB port for connecting a printer via cable. Although some may. Check with your local BestBuy.

Thanks Kim and Bob,
I have a big screen Toshiba Tablet, less than a year old. Only used about 5 times. So I guess I should bring the printer with me, it is an HP envy model. I keep the tablet in the original box with instructions and charger, should I discard the box before I bring it down so Aguna? does not give me hassle? I will ask Best Buy if printer will work. May just buy a laptop anyway.

Re: want to buy new computer
You are allowed certain things like one laptop, one movie camera, etc etc. Desktop you may have to pay customs/duty/tax. You should not have a problem with your Toshiba Tablet as Tablets are on the list. Google what I can bring into mexico for more info. It is quite a long list. With exception of items on list you can bring 300USD worth of stuff by land and 500USD of stuff by air. Don't ask me why different. I once brought back 1000USD worth of stuff not on the list on an airplane. I had to pay 15.5% (IVA tax whatever it is) on 500USD. They expect you to pay in Pesos also. You are suppose to declare before you push the red/green button. They seemed shocked that someone would voluntarily pay the tax without trying to avoid it. I was bringing in gobs of electronic stuff so I felt the right thing to do was pay. Your mileage and ethics may vary. If your printer was not sold in Mexico you probably can't get print cart. or ink here. Envy is HP high end normally so not sure how much envy stuff is sold in Latin America. Bring extra ink/cart possibly if you want to bring printer down. An HP AIO ink jet (HP4535) is only about 800P here and you can buy cart/ink at Costco or BestBuy. Lots of refillers here also but many new cart are hard to refill or time out over time. Keep ink/cart. in fridge in baggy for maximum life without evaporating.
A printer is a printer but a laptop keyboard is local to US. Things like : or : are not under your right little finger on a spanish keyboard. This is disasterous for a touch typer tech guy or at least me laugh out loud. Tablets, chromebooks will do pretty much all you need to do but remember not all software is available for these alternative systems. Most of us are very use to MS products.
Good Luck and do your homework and all will be well.

Bill, you have a perfectly good desktop computer and you are familiar with using it and it works quite well with your printer. AND there is no custom's charge on 1 desktop any more. AND you are driving your car all the way so you have the room. Don't make things any harder nor more expensive than they have to be. BRING the DESKTOP and Printer.
Just my opinion....
BTW, when is the trip?

Re: want to buy new computer
Bill: If you do bring your desktop -- have Geeksquad backup the entire hard drive to a Seagate or other backup drive. That way, if the desktop gets jostled too much on the drive down, you will have the backup drive with programs and data.
Chances are good that since your printer is wireless it is not dependent on a parallel port connection as is true of many legend printers. (Even if it were pp dependent, Steren here sells the USB to PP adapter.)
If you want a laptop, definitely buy in the US: besides keyboard issues, the models are newer and the prices lower. As for toner cartridges -- it seems that most places here carry the cartridges for the printer models they are currently selling or have sold somewhat recently.

Re: want to buy new computer
How did you ship these down, M&BD? Sol y Luna, Dave Peterson? How? Didn't you have to pay 50% duty on all that?

TR,
I go to Amazon and do a search for what I want. Then I click on "Ship to Mexico" (In the photo link below).
This gets rid of most that do not ship here.
The Duty is added to the cost, if you are over charged duty Amazon returns the amount in 30 days. I've got from 3 cents to 15 bucks returned.
Depending on what you want and how bad you want it shipping may be high (for your opinion)
My motherboard cost $350 before shipping and duty (American and $150 duty and shipping but I needed/wanted it that bad. The overall cost for the computer I built (UPS backup, monitors, HD's, sound system ect) was about $8,000.00 last I added up. Of that about $1,500 was shipping and duty. The duty is not as much as one might think TR....
If you need more help/information on how to get things down here from Amazon give me a shout!

Now somethings you can't get sent here. Food, wood, meat etc.
In 4 years I've spent about $20,000 on a lot of different items and had them shipped here. From lighting, meat grinders, vacuum packers, smokers, TV's ect.....
P.S. don't us Amazon Mexico they order from Amazon USA and add to that price. I've only been able to buy one item at a better price from Amazon Mexico and that was one monitor.
