UPS Scam
I almost got caught up in a UPS scam. I mailed a UPS envelope with 2 very small boxes inside....hearing aids that were new but did not work. The company agreed to replace them free of charge. I sent them by UPS envelope at a cost of 83 dollars, yes, 83 dollars. A few days later it was returned saying customs had refused them because they had been used. I pointed out the envelope had never been opened....the mailing store said....Oh, they used x Ray.............pardon me...how can yoj tell by x raY IF SOMETHING IS USED. A said, well I guess I have some money coming back....a long pause and then the answer....probably not. My fuse went off. I got to work on UPS , the local mailing facility and anyone else I cold think of and raised all you know what. I told UPS...Maybe you should suspend the franchise of the local Ajijic facility from UPS services until they pay. That was a week ago. Frankly, I don't think the envelope ever left Ajijic. Finally today I got a call my money was refunded and was ready to be picked up....that I did pronto.
Never be afraid to question what happens when things go wrong when dealing with the local folks. One friend said....No such thing as a stupid question. Buyer Beware !!

Re: UPS Scam
Doc Holiday is a personal friend of mine and I introduced him to this web board just yesterday. The photo below is the normal sized package he was charged $83.00 to ship to NC. One thing is clear...they contacted him 2-days later on the return. Meaning, it went to the border, processed through customs then returned here in 48-hours. Hell, I can't got to the border and return in 48-hours no matter how hard I try! I'm old and slow.
There are no markings on the package, it is still unopened....no evidence to say it was legally tampered with in any way. EDITED SLANDEROUS COMMENTS REMOVED.

$83.00?

Re: UPS Scam
Did you go to the UPS website and punch in the tracking number as suggested by Spencer? That tracking number is scanned into the system when it was picked up.

Another gringo that jumps to conclusions. They automatically assume they're being had because they are in Mexico. They couldn't be bothered with checking the tracking before making accusations. Pathetic.
As far as the 48 hour time frame, I guess brlahere isn't aware of air freight. I ordered something on line last week from NYC. It was delivered to my home here in Mexico in less than 48 hours.

Re: UPS Scam
Is there another side to this story?
I think UPS use air cargo out of GDL. I know FedEx does.

Re: UPS Scam
So the package went ground to the border? Generally most express companies ship by air from GDL.
You should ship FedEx from their local office. You get a tracking number and next day delivery in USA and Canada.
I ship from there every week or so. Envelope cost similar to the pic is about 800 pesos for 1/2 kilo or less. (to Canada) should be less to NC

Re: UPS Scam
I am a Berkely graduate and have lived here not just full 2 weeks...in fact, I have lived here almost 25 years. Tracking is not the main issue. Do not cloud your brain with the tracking issue. That is not the main issue. As you can see by the photo, the package was never opened nor is there any notation of rejection....a normal procedure. UPS claims it determined by X RAY the contents were used. They said new items would pass, but not used. In fact, they were new and were being returned because they were defective upon receipt. This claim is beyond belief and an insult to intelligence. If they had opened the package, they would have found a letter from the manufacturer to this effect.
The second issue is the UPS claim of refund . I Googled UPS REFUND and found many pages. After entering several of the sites and asking for a full refund...I got one consistent answer. The refund is to come from the UPS Agent that accepted the package, not UPS So much for a refund guarantee.
I did get a refund....further investigation suggests that the refund money was paid from the pocket of the Mexican Agent. Bravo for them.

You should tell your amigo as he was hanging the agent out to dry.

Re: UPS Scam
Actually, the tracking issue was found to not even be in the records of UPS. The number was ran twice and UPS does not recognize it.
Air cargo is another issue. It's not a question of how it got to the border, the issue is WHEN has any efficiency been so prompt in any business operation in Mexico. Very hard to recall I would think. I personally have received overnight deliveries from the US and also have paid for overnight delivery in which took a week to arrive.
This entire event actually has nothing to do with UPS but deals directly with the Ishop business and their lying about the matter and would not give the refund until UPS was contacted.

I am never afraid to question what happens when dealing with human beings. Warning about "the local folks" is insulting, as though you do not need to question what happens if someone is not local/ Mexican.

Really? "Local folks"? What a nasty, insulting, rather bigoted thing to write. I don't care if you went to Berkeley or you've lived here 25 years, or a hundred years. Thanks Lady Otter Latte for saying what many of us were thinking when reading the OP.

Re: UPS Scam
While doing my post graduate studies at Berkely, I took a course in various terms used in the English language in various part of the world where English is spoken. Terms such as..Over Yonder, I reckon, pernear, You all, and Local folks usually comes from the South of the United States. It is a term used to refer to all people regardless of race, color or creed in that particular area, usually a smaller area such as here where we live. I think you would enjoy a study in terms such these. English can vary so much from place to place.
The term Local Folks is very acceptable and used quite often in the South of the United States. Please do not be offended.

The local words or phrases you refer to are called colloquialisms. I find it odd that a person of your educational level would have omitted using the proper word to describe them. And for someone with who supposedly took graduate studies you have very poor spelling skills. The term 'local folks' is not a proper noun therefore should not be capitalized. Hell, I learned that in grade school. And people in the South use a lot of words that may be acceptable to them but not the rest of the world.

Re: UPS Scam
Because Berkeley grads are liberal socialist democrats, we spend more time demonstrating than in class. We got paid to demonstrate. Maybe our actual education was not the best. We believe in free healthcare for everyone, free college for everyone, and reserve the right to freedom to speak to suppress those who do not agree with us. Perhaps that is why I never could get a job with my Berkeley degree. I guess that is why my parents pay me to move out of the house and pay me to live in Mexico.

This sounds familiar.

Why did no one pay me, to demonstrate at Berkeley. I guess the tear gas was enough.

Yes, it was. I deleted the first one where you started calling someone names in an inappropriate area and then you reposted it. Thanks for noticing.

Re: UPS Scam
I understand there is no such service as UPS Ground. Everything goes air at overnight or two day. I have found that this is true for the other carriers. I usually pay for 2nd Day and get overnight delivery, although you can't count on that quick delivery. No Ground service is why the carriers charge so much.
