Has anyone here had any direct experience with board and care facilities Lakesde?
My wife's mother may come here and need a B&C facility and don't know of any locally.
I'm also wondering if she has to show sufficient income to be able to stay past the 180 days on a tourist visa.
Thanks.

180 days is the maximum one can stay on the tourist visa.

If she wants to legally stay longer than 180 days , she needs to apply for temporal or permanente status.

As a resident of Panama she does not require a visa but still may stay no more than 180 days. Google is your friend.

Personally, I don't think she will need more than 180 days. She is 96 and going downhill fast.
Anyplace I can check out?
Thanks.

Speculation: What happens on day #181 if you're wrong?

What is it you wish to check out?
It seems easier and kinder for your wife to go to the Philippines to be with her dying mother than to haul the poor woman to Mexico to die. Have mercy on the poor woman.

He wants to check out care facilities! There are ads in the Ojo and the Guad Reporter. I have no experience with any of them.

This isn't direct experience, but since no one else is chiming in ... I had a conversation with someone recently who did check out some local care facilities to care for a stroke victim and she was most impressed by Ohana in San Juan Cosala.

I assume that some of those responding to this inquiry know the OP and his family... References to Panama and Philippines seem confusing to others.

OHANA is in west Ajijic, just west of the Oxxo/Pemex. It has always looked good to me--nice, pretty, quiet setting; but perhaps, assuming your relative needs to be here, you should post an inquiry for people who live in, or have relatives in, one of the local assisted living facilities. My knowledge (no direct experience) is that such facilities are very good here--among other reasons, because of the Mexican staff--there is a tradition in Mexican families of taking care of elders, plus there is not the age discrimination-based attitude of the US. I have one friend who brought his wife here from Canada when she developed age-related problems. She received good care, he was able to find a rental nearby and could easily visit every day.

I have several friends who have been or are at Mi Casita in San Antonio. Lovely facility and caring staff.
The income needed for a Temporal (FKA FM3) is about $1500 a month.

She herself doesn't have that income; can I sponsor her?
Any idea of the cost of Ohana. They don't appear to have a website; maybe don't need one.
I don't see any reference to the Philippines in this thread (unless it's spelled differently).
Thanks.

Sounds like you need an appointment with Spencer. He will explain everything......

The downside to staying here in a nursing facility on a Tourist Visa ( and I am sure there are some) is you would not be able to join SP or IMSS. Which means you would have to pay out of pocket medical expenses

Excellent point, Lakeside7.
Mi Casita and Ohana are my 2 favorites. I have had friends, and still have friends, in both of them and they are treated very well and are getting very good care.
Ohana, btw, is on the lake in San Juan Cosala.

Well assuming she is fit enough for the travel and actually wants to come down here, at 96, I wouldn't worry about anything beyond a tourist visa and finding a good care facility. It not likely she will ever require any expensive medical procedures. They won't do much with an ailing 96 year old other than to give meds and make her comfortable. INM isn't going to track her down and chuck her out.

As far as the immigration part there are 2 ways she could legally stay here past the 180 days.
Regarding old folks homes, there are 20 and only about 6 or 7 are officially registered with the state health authorities which is no guarantee of quality but they at least have to meet certain standards and if they dont comply then can lose their registration.

I have personal experience with several friends who used this place. I visited very often and was impressed. Nice place. Really nice people. They are not exactly what I would call a nursing home but have a lot of experience dealing with typical medical needs. They can take their guests to medical appointments, help manage medication and arrange for pretty much anything that is needed. I personally would look at this place for myself if (or when) I need this type of help.

The thing about La Casa Nostra is that it has two areas for patients. The newer area built on three sides of a square is nice (dining/rec area on one side, rooms on two sides), and I've known people rehabbing after surgery who stayed there and loved it.
The other area is upstairs in an older building, and when I visited last year had 5-6 very old people, a couple of whom seemed to be close to dying. It was bare bones and sort of sad, and not a place I'd want to be if I were still mentally alert. There were, however, a lot of people working there and the care giver to patient ratio looked good.

Sadly geriatric care is not the most sort after area of nursing care and help in any of the facilities here or NOB has a high turn over of nurses and or aides.

Re: Has anyone here had any direct experience with board and care facilities Lakesde?
Thanks for all the input.
This is a bad situation. Mentally very deteriorated; can't really communicate verbally and needs a place that will handle the fact she wears pampers, etc.
Thia ia my wife'a mother.
The problem is also, even at 96, she could continue this way for a year or 2 or 3. There is a lot more why we need her to be in a facility, but the family will not chip in to cover the costs in Panama.
It's a sad story.
I only wish if it were me, someone would help me have a final exit with dignity.
I will check out what is said above.
Thanks.
