Need to Repair Door Lock Empty Need to Repair Door Lock

Post by TooMuchCoffee Tue Dec 12, 2017 4:12 pm

I have a door lock like the one shown below.  It takes considerable jiggling to get the key out of the lock, and some day it may not come out at all.  I'm planning on replacing it with a new lock.

Does anybody have a recommendation for a locksmith or handyman who can replace the lock?  It's held in by 2 screws and 2 rivets.

The locksmith in Chapala, on Morelos, east of Madero, on the right with the key sign. They can replace the entire lock, or maybe just the tumbler.

Or you can try spraying the hole where the key is inserted with WD40 first. It usually works for me when I have any key that won't come out of the lock... even while the key is still stuck in there.

ditto what ferret said. Spray it and work the key back and forth several times. If you don't have wd 40, a little 3 in 1 oil will also work.

I to solved my problems with WD-40 and then working the key in the lock and then repeating. I have to do this on some locks every year or three.

I have what looks like the same lock on my front door - purchased from the guys mentioned above in Chapala. After several years I had the same problem - key stuck, wouldn't turn, couldn't even open the door.

The guys from Chapala came and were able to get it open. They then took the whole thing apart, cleaned it, fiddled with the internal springs, etc. They put it back on the door and it has worked perfectly for several more years after their visit.

I thought about just replacing it when I had the problem but I couldn't get it open so had to have them come out anyway. I was fully expecting for them to tell me it had to be replaced but they did their magic and saved me a few pesos.

Definitely the go to guys.

I have had better luck with mine if I turn the key CCW 1/4 turn then turn the key CW to open.  That seems to trigger the inside mechanism to catch and open the latch.  Buena suerte.

I have the same lock and had a similar problem recently. WD 40 solved it.
If the problem persists, besides the lock place in Chapala I have found that ironworking shops are good at fixing them.
