Toronto Shootings Empty Toronto Shootings

Post by Canada_Mike Mon Jul 23, 2018 7:20 pm

Last night a deranged young man shot 13 people on Toronto's Danforth Avenue, Greektown. Two died. An 18 year old recent high school grad, and a 10 year old girl. Until we moved two years ago, this was our hood. We could be up there for dinner any time, and the young folk would stroll up to get an iced capp at a moment's notice. I have friends who heard the shots. It's beyond troubling.

So sorry that these events are beginning to happen in GTA. Thank God you have much stronger gun control regulations than we have SOB in the US

I've also been following this tragic event. One of my stepsons lives close by and it has always been a favourite area for me. I went to St. Barnabas nursery school when we first arrived in Canada. Sigh. All because of a mentally deranged young man. So very sad.

I thought strong gun regs would make it impossible for criminals to get guns.  NO?

Those who want stricter gun laws should come up with a program that only takes the guns away from criminals and the mentally challenged...

If you can do that you can run for president or the US or the Canadian equivalent...

We do have strong gun regs, especially for handguns and automatic weapons. But it's incredibly easy to smuggle them in from the States. We'll never stop them completely.
The shooter was a 29 year-old long suffering from mental illness.

Canada should adopt Australia's gun control policies.

I would say that Canada, Australia and Japan do not have strong "gun cultures". They are not afraid of them, but guns are not worshipped as some sort of fetish, tied in with popular culture and politics

True.
And, I just learned that my granddaughter, Emma was friends with one of the girls who was shot, who herself was a best friend of the poor girl who was murdered. This is a very small town.

The problem for Canada is the same as Mexico's......
They are sitting too close to the largest gun manufacturing, distribution, and inventory facilities in the world.

Of course.  That is Mexico's problem.  It's all the USA's fault.

Well, the US can't even control who buys or secures guns in their own country so they can't be expected to do it outside their own borders, now can they? Rolling Eyes

There is plenty of blame to go around...being in the wrong place at the wrong time.......sadly no one can bring the girls back.
I would suggest that the culture of violence has become the norme , the bad and ugly TV programs have to have some negative effect on its viewers.
If not guns then stabbings and throwing acid in someone face.
Some countries seem to have a culture of crime and violence, others are more tranquil...you can make your own judgement

I recall this location of the fountain where I enjoyed Greek pastries, these memories will forever be changed as has the lives of the ones who had to experience the terrible event...

Now ISIS is claiming responsibility. The Toronto Police force is saying there is no proof of that yet.

The US has never blamed Mexico for the drug problems there. They have merely pointed out the fact that nearly all the deadly drugs come either from or through Mexico, with only cursory intervention from the Mexican government. True or false?

False (IMO). They blame Mexico and expect them to conduct a "war on drugs" to prevent them from getting to the US. At least Canada told the US to stuff their "war on drugs" suggestion a few year back. Maybe the US should be expected to conduct a "war on guns" to prevent them from entering Canada or Mexico??

Frankly, who cares where the drugs come from, what's of interest are the societal pressures that result in self-destructive drug use (not all recreational drug use if harmful). A happy society doesn't self-medicate to epidemic proportions and to high rates of mortality. Americas public face has always been a lie, only difference is we now get to see it unvarnished and in real time.

"The US has never blamed Mexico for their drug problem"

If the US (Trump) doesn't blame Mexico, then he shouldn't be asking (has asked) Mexico to "pay" for the wall.  True or false?
I think that was his original intention but that didn't fly too well.
