Playa Mayto - Surf Fishing

While not the best time of year for surf fishing (the water is too warm) we decided to go check out Playa Mayto this week. It is considered one of the best surf fishing beaches on the Mexican west coast. It is located about 2 hours south of Puerto Vallarta (about 7 1/2 hour drive from here). We stayed at one of the few hotels in this area. It was called Hotel Mayto. Being literally in the middle of no-where we were blown away by the accommodations and on site restaurant. Definitely 4 star IMO.

The beach was 9kms of beautiful white sand with no one around. We rented ATV's from a local guy for $75.00 USD per day to get from place to place along the beach. The fishing itself was a bit slow. We caught 1 needlefish, 2 small rooster fish, 2 small toro's and 1 medium sized tuna. We had great time and will definitely be going back in January when the fishing is normally better.

The fishing was a bit slow? How about inking me in for the next trip. That kind of fishing at that kind of a resort and in the boons to boot, anytime! Thank you.

Oh and were the rods and reels rentals? And while I'm at it, jigs and/or bait?

It was all surf fishing with our own equipment. Top lures casted out as far as you can, then reeled in as fast as you can. We use the ATV's to chase the birds/bait boils. Great exercise……..lol. Will pen you in for the next trip.

There is a fishing village of about 300 people a few kilometers south. Other than that El Tuito is 25 kms east.

Great photos! I googled the place, and yes, it looks and sounds like a great place to escape and do a bit of fishing off the beaten path!

Fishing in Mexico is just like an adventure, it is a lot of fun.

Great photo's! Can you rent fishing gear there?

I'm not sure but likely the fellow that rents the ATV's would also have some extra fishing gear as he also takes tourists out surf fishing.

Anyone here have fishing experience at Caleta de Campos?
