OK, so cohetes galore, bands and all. What's the deal?

Virgen de Guadalupe celebration tomorrow Dec 12

My poor dog has moved under the bed. Semi-permanently.

do not forget Mike that religious celebrations last 9 days they end on the day of the sant.. so tomorrow is the last day of the Virgin de Guadalupe celebrations.. and then we have parties and posadas until christmas...and then big cohetes for New Year.. and on and on.. it never ends except for Lent that gets a little quieter.. so be ready that will start on the 6th of March.

Well, can't complain abut a good party!! But last night they began at 4 am! Oh, well, es Mexico.

Exactly, and there nothing more sacred and more uniting to all Mexicans than the Virgen.
Unique to this country and anyone coming from somewhere else to live here should know that this is the most Mexican of all Mexican traditions and beliefs.

Very interesting - thanks! I was fooled this morning by the bandas and the music they were playing. Now I understand.

They play music to honor the saints--They played la mañanitas, the birthday song as it is the day of the Virgin today. a birthday sort of..lor more like a commemoration day..

Well, newbie is tricky. I've owned my house here since 1996, so 22 years. I remember hen there were NO stoplights. And I do want topint out that in the OP I did not complain about anything, but simply asked what the holiday was. Still, I appreciate your support.

Mike, I'm NOT being snarky but . . . living here for 22 years and you didn't know it was Virgin de Guadalupe? Just asking. See my confusion?

I moved here when there was only 1 stoplight.

Well, maybe not quite that long ago....but she is old.....

Sorry for the delay - internet issues. First off, I wasn't here for many Decembers until recently following my retirement. Secondly, I stupidly posted before looking at my calendar. Finally, while I've own for 22 years, i have not lived here that long. Mostly I'd be here for a week or two when conducting business in Mexico. Four years ago I started spending winters here and will continue to do so.
