JANELLE'S: successor to Bobby's
We had one unfortunate lunch experience at the restaurant after the Canadian couple took over from Bobby and didn't return until someone, whose food reviews I find accurate, posted that things were much improved. Today, the traffic heading East was SO bad that we headed for Janelle's.
We both went for the Indian curry with chicken and were very pleased. It was such a generous serving that I took some home, although spouse cleaned his plate. Tasty chutney served, too. There was an interesting variety of lunch offerings at very reasonable prices. The service was good. We'll be back.
The only bad note was the carrot fritter appetizer, which was both tasteless and greasy.....so we'll skip a repeat on that.

Good to hear. Even when Bobby was there the portions were so skimpy I would leave hungry and I don’t require platters of food.

I've been there several times this season, and agree they have improved. And, Fridays is still two for one.

Have you gone on Friday this season, and if so, was it a real meal for each person? I ask because, in the waning days of Bobby's, (after he was ill and took on the partner who ruined the quality to save $$$ on ingredients) we had a twofer that was so skimpy that it seemed like half a meal.Canada_Mike wrote:I've been there several times this season, and agree they have improved. Back then or now??
Our friend wanted to try it for lunch, so we went back again today. She had a chicken salad with watermelon and liked it, and I chanced the sirloin burger. Huge and thick on a very good (non Bimbo) bun with all the trimmings. Salad or fries, and the salad I chose was fine. Excellent burger. Price was 80 pesos. Yum.

It was skimpy back then, no question. The carrot fritters were always burnt. 2-fer dinners got you half the amount on each plate. Food quality sank to the bottom. Service was atrocious (and often drunk). Things are much better now.

A friend of ours said the Sunday Chinese special was much better these days, so we tried it. Cheep? Yep. 99 pesos. The soup was included and was delicious. They brought bread with a choice of spreads, including a good salmon mousse.
Main dish: Spouse ordered mu shu pork; generous portion and tasty.I opted for the sweet and sour fish: don't do that unless you like flavorless sauce. The fish itself was well prepared in a light batter.
The fritters are still greasy, but somebody must like them.
In general: Yes, it's much better than it was in the old days.

A friend and I had dinner in Janelle's Garden Friday night. My friend had the Indian curry and could not stop saying how good it was. It was plentiful'
I had a unique dish who's name escapes me which was also good.
The service was excellent. A women was singing but the music was soft and did not interfere with conversation. It was good background.
We will be returning.
