what's a good surface to put around a pool?
concrete, like exposed aggregate
cantera
travertine
they have some version here of cooldeck (we had at an old house and it did not last very long)

Cool deck is good for small areas. I would go aggregate or stamped concrete.

are the concrete surfaces typically 'hotter'. Someone mentioned that to me, but I did not know if that was the case or not ....

They can do stamped concrete in different colors. Pick a light color.

A lot of pools here have canterra surrounds which works well if your pool is not salt water. Salt water destroys canterra very quickly.
