Anyone else notice the prices going crazy.
Starting to look like Cancun or Puerto Valarta

All the new eating establishments with the 600-800 pp.
I'm sure it's a tasty treat... I'm just afraid where it's leading.

Mentioned this once before and one nice lady replied
" Back in San Francisco, I paid $9.00 for half an avocado."

I held my tongue... lol

The biggest increases have been in medical and gasoline.........from my observations. Booze, smokes and common household items haven't risen as much.

Really? I guess smokes have gone from about $2.00 to $3.50 and I haven't noticed any big increase in the price of vodka.

I think it's mostly due to the cost of gasoline. Everything we consume get shipped in from somewhere. Everybody has had to increase prices as a result.
The good news is that fuel prices have normalized so prices should not rise as much now.

If that were the case, we would see the costs applied outside this area. Once you get away from this area, prices drop. It's getting too expensive for some of us, especially those who came years ago on different income requirements, and is out of reach for many nationals. Some foreigners are quietly moving away to less expensive areas. More are coming though. Prices will continue to rise here.

Couldn't agree more, Kiri. It's not about gasoline here, its about supply and demand.

Where are the oldtimers moving to? I'm up for a move.

The Canadian dollar being at $0.75 USD isn't helping matters either for all the canucks here.

With the thousands of "national" business owners, stores, merchants, providers of services, what have you, here locally, where do you suppose those price increase revenues are going?  Are you saying there is an elite local class of native capitalists, since this is only happening locally and not elsewhere in the country?  Very few foreigners are engaged in "actividades lucrativas", and if they are, it is some internet conducted business which has little effect on the local cost of living.  There is not many nationwide "cadenas" with locations in the Chapala area, except for Walmart, Soriana, and a few others.  Many goods and services are cheaper in the Lake area than GDL Metropolitan area where 7 million people live.

I guess we are going to be in for some culture shock when we get there in June. It will be just short of 5 years since the last time we were there. Peso was at 20 to 1, Adelitas had ribs, all you can eat Tuesdays, for 80 pesos. They were very good too. We tried to order a half rack, but the waiter said "no, no. You get full rack and if you cannot finish, we will give you carry out." All you can eat with carryout, my wife and I still laugh about it.

No, you're not likely to find the prices as low as they used to be, but there's only a few places that charge the kind of prices mentioned by hockables as being in the $600 to $800 range.  When we go out, we expect to pay around $200 pesos for an entree at dinner, or under $150 for a good lunch. These are sit down, comfortable places which exist all over the Lakeside area, so don't worry.

Have you tried El Rey Taco, just around the corner from Soriana? They have kept their pricing low, but the quality is very high. Second generation professional chef. https://restaurantguru.com/amp/El-Rey-Taco-Chapala/menu
The secret to successful restaurants, and successful farms, is ownership of the space. In the case of El Rey he converted a portion of family's home into a restaurant. Landlords began to get greedy when the US dollar started to double.

Add to the list of lower priced restaurants with good food:  Gosha's, el Ancla,
Janelle's, Bobby's La Terrazza, Cocinart and the place on the Ajijic plaza.

We love the Pork Chops at Tango's and their ice cream. Gosha's was new when we were there last time and was another favorite of ours. Gosha (Polish) and us (retired Polish Folk Dancers), hit it off well. We also frequented the Beer Garden in Chapala. The waiter there served us so often that when we came through the entrance, he'd point at us and say "Ice tea, Ice tea."

I always found the Beer Garden to be overpriced even 10 years ago.
