FoodBank Lakeside
This is exciting. This can be an amazing opportunity for us to help all our food-insecure friends and neighbors. Friend/Follow this on FB for latest info. This is from their page:
WOW! In just a few short days, we have been able to raise enough money, secure two distribution points and will be able to feed 40 families for a week! All thanks to the generous donations from YOU!
FoodBank Lakeside is a small, local organization made up of volunteers that are ramping up to meet the growing needs of our local Lakeside families needing food assistance due to lost work, expat employer departures, and the Mexican government orders to stay home.
Starting tomorrow, we will begin providing needy families with enough food to last them for one week. There is one despensa in San Antonio Tlayacapan and one in Ajijic.
Each family receives a food kit that includes items like, Rice, Sugar, Beans, Pastas, Oil, Tissue Paper, Eggs, Laundry Soap, Milk, Oats, Lentils, Bath Soap, and Tuna.
We will also be making sure they have a weeks worth of dog food for their dogs.
Your generous contribution of $15 USD will feed a family of two for a week, and just $30 USD will help us achieve our goal of feeding a family of four!
Starting the following week, we will start to prepare food kits to last these families for two weeks, in order to help with safe social distancing practices.
But we can't do it without YOU! Please share our request everywhere ... your friends and families, social media, emails, anywhere and everywhere!
And please give whatever amount you can at this time! Our local community needs YOUR HELP!

Re: FoodBank Lakeside
Yes for sure. Without government support this food bank is desperately needed. Some of our Mexican neighbor's would have to stray to desperate measures in order to eat. I hope CFE and Telmex offer 6 months free to the people of Mexico or something along those lines.
Everyone with the means needs to support this!!!!!

The PayPal is set up for Canadian money. Â I want to donate in US dollars so my donation will go further. Â How can I do that?

Re: FoodBank Lakeside
Ok. The person behind this is the person behind the FB crime page. Precious money used to donate to this food bank will go to PaYPal and credit card charges and conversion rates. And this account has been set up for Canadian dollars, this person Canadian.
YOU CAN AVOID THIS!
Take your contributions in Ajijic to the restaurant Chili Verde on the plaza. They are closed today, but tomorrow on they are open. Wonderful local people who have been making food boxes and giving them out there. This is a good choice - local peeps helping local peeps - with our help, of course.
In Chapala, Rony is working with the head of DIF to make and distribute food packages there. Also a good place to contribute as it too will be locals helping locals without credit card or PayPal charges. I suggest you support either of these 2 endeavors. I will let you know when I hear from Rony the details on how his program will work. It will be soon.

Re: FoodBank Lakeside
Do whatever works for you. When I went to the link posted, it was set up for US only donations and I paid with my Canadian credit card.
I really don't care who set it up if it's going to the people in need and anything shady will come to light soon enough.
It was easy and painless and I didn't have to leave the house.
Give to whomever you like.

I did not say the FoodBank effort was shady nor did I imply that! I applaud this person for putting it together. I am simply saying . . .
Don't put words in my mouth, ferret!

Re: FoodBank Lakeside
This is what Rony is doing for Chapala:
The situation here at Lakeside is and will stay bad for A LOT of Mexican people. Therefore, this week, a friend and I are starting a COVID19 FOOD EMERGENCY PROJECT. No money, only food, and what you bring in the morning will be handed out to ONLY needy people the very same day ( Tepehua, abused women and older people that usually go to DIF ). Nobody has to go hungry here.... and in the end, we all want to avoid a higher crime rate.
How it works ?
This coming Friday, GOOD FRIDAY, April 10th, at 11 am SHARP, bring to DIF centro Chapala :
A bag with :
- one kilo of beans
- a big white loaf of Bimbo bread
- 3 apples
- a small package of cookies ( preferably Chokis... they sell them at OXO )
For the time being, plse, NOTHING else, as we want to start simple, easy, and give the same to every person.
It is a gift of max 100 pesos, and if we all chip in, it will make a world of difference for a lot of people in these difficult times.
I will monitor the waiting line, to help people respect SAFE DISTANCING ( Mexicans will also receive leaflets about this.... and only one member of the family can come, and we will have hand sanitzers there ).
If you want to avoid going out, maybe one person can collect the bags on behalf of several people, and bring it all to DIF that morning.
Show your good heart. It is only a small effort. If it becomes a success, we will continue this on a regular basis. The leaflet points out that this is the expat community helping our Mexican neighours in need.
The more bags, the better.

Best we can do is 1,000 pesos via Pay Pal (no canned food or running around). Good luck Rony, may your highway to heaven be tope-less.
