Ocote aka Fatwood NOB?
Anyone have a source for bulk ocote in the lake area? Great for starting carbon without using petroleum product. Don't care for the puny $15 MXN packages at WW.

I strongly recommend a starter chimney. One bit of starter or one sheet of newspaper and you're off and running.

The first time I bought a bundle of ocote, it didn' t smell or burn like pine pitch. It was sticks soaked in wax. So be careful. Real ocote is wonderful to smell.

the one from the tianguis is real ocote and so is the one I buy on the carretera..All you have to do is smell it when you buy it , it is not complicated and the best thing to start a fire. It is cold in CHiapas and I staret a fire everyday with it so I can recommentdit as the best fire starter..
My god son is a remaist and also starts his kiln with ocote.

I looked up “remaist” and all I could find was that it is a brand name of Remdesivir

So either we simply failed to spot the ocote vendor or they weren't in attendance today? Since we are planning a drive to Mazmitla tomorrow, thought we might try to find the wood guy on the west side or thought maybe someone in Mazmitla? Anyone who can provide a clue on where the wood guy is on west side?

Many decades ago, I made a 'starter chimney' from a single section of stovepipe, available at any hardware store, a simple insulated handle and a couple of bolts did the trick.

While attending Dia de los Muertos in Patzcuaro last week, we found legit bundles of ocote in their permanent Mercado. In fact, one visit an older gentleman was delivering his daily harvest of very large bundles to the vendor we had found.. He delivered 15 bundles and we bought 10 as he was unloading his bag. Each ocote stick was 6 to 8 inches long and each bundle looked to be the equivalent of 10 to 15 of the 15 Peso packets found in the stores. Same price $15MXN per large bundle.
