Re: Chocolates
I sure would like to see some paper on that. This is a story that started a few weeks ago.
So I did a quick Google. There may be more and better info because this is the WaPo and needs a sign in. https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/2021/10/20/mexico-illegal-chocolate-cars/
This does not: https://apnews.com/article/lifestyle-business-caribbean-mexico-de108cf457786f7438c7b85a49743600
BUT at the moment everything is about the 7 northern Mexican states (that in itself is ridiculous), and no prices discussed.

Well, it’s bothering the auto dealers.

Only along the border. Not applicable to us in Jalisco but maybe in future.

I was told by a reptuble source ( to me) Cost is 2,500 pesos. These legalizations will all be about attitude. Show up renting a farmer paisano, not a gold tooth, nice suit and tie, aviator shades, Lic. No Go, No Vas!

Did this reliable source say it is available in other than border states? Everything I have read in reliable sources says border states only.

Re: Chocolates
I will ask him, but I think you are correct, at this time at least. With 18 million chocolate vehicles in Mexico, I am sure someone will find away around this. As far as cartel profiting, I can' t see where, other than bringing in flood salvage vehicles and fixing them. This includes a new computer and sensors if they do it right.

Re: Chocolates
Here in s. Texas we see a constant flow of damaged cars being towed south by transmigrantes. I talked to a fellow doing this. He said the cars are towed all the way to s. America. He flies back once a month to do a trip.
Maybe some of them will end up in Mexico.

Re: Chocolates
The price for a flood damaged vehicle is 25% off wholesale book value, then another $2,000 U.S. off to cover future damage, such as a corroding computer. They should also make sure the vehice is not water locked, which means water got in the carburator or fuel injectors when the engine was running, and the pistons become locked. Diesel vehicles are a better choice, because they have no ignition leads or sparkplugs to be shorted out with water.

Re: Chocolates
I’ve been buying salvage cars for several years now. It’s a “buyer beware” market so it’s a good idea to take someone else with you and thoroughly check the car. But surprises will still pop up down the line so be sure you get a very good deal. Yours sounds like a good rule of thumb
