That's an agave, not an aloe. Agaves have hard, flattish leaves with deadly spikes on the end, as your photo shows. Aloes are fleshy and don't have spikes.
My similar agaves (mine are vareigated) have never flowered, so I don't know if the plant dies off after.

Btw, I meant to say how cool that is.
I looked it up, as I'm an avid gardener and was curious. Sadly, yes, they do die after flowering.

Mine shoot up baby plants all around the main plant all the time, though. The roots send out runners and new plants pop up.

How do you tell the difference between an agave and a yucca? To my untrained eye they look very similar. Not all yuccas die after each flowering.

Yuccas are in the same family of plants as agaves. But BisbeeGal's photo is what is commonly called agave. Yuccas have thinner, more swordlike leaves.

If agave the mother plant will die but you can get the pups.
