MajikJack Arghhhh
I did post this on TOB. My apologies but I'm desperate for help.
SunFan
I’m trying (with little success) to use MajicJack PLUS here in Lakeside.
I’m in Upper Chula Vista using what TELMEX euphemistically calls a DSL service. The original basic service delivered ping at 248 ms, down load at .9 mbps and uplink at .09 mbps. I had the service upgraded to the next highest speed and this morning am enjoying anything from .48 to .59 mbps download and .04 to .08 mbps uplink!!!!!!!!
Yes I know I will get used to the Mexican way of doing business.
The problem with MajicJack is I get an error 401 message asking me to check my internet connection. I’ve now made 6 visits over 5 days to the MajicJack Live Agent. I’ve had all sorts of unbelievable explanations from my USB port doesn’t supply enough power to I’ve got old software.
Each time I go through this ritualistic process of removing the MalicJack device from it’s wireless router connection, plugging it into my laptop, downloading the latest version of their software, running a version of Hotspotshield, checking the system clock time and finally re-connecting the MajicJack to the router.
Miracle! I can place and receive a call or two for an hour or so then it’s back to “error 401 please check your internet connection”.
I suspect one of two problems….
TELMEX’s internet is too slow (I can barely stream audio – forget video)
Or I have a DNS problem. TELMEX periodically refreshes my I/P and
MajicJack can’t cope. Does MajicJack require a static I/P?
Help. I’m about to throw MJ into the lake. Any help would be most appreciated.

Re: MajikJack Arghhhh
Our Telmex has been very erratic for the last two weeks, which has affected our VoIP service as well. Let's face it, you don't move here for the wonderful internet service. Basically, it sucks.

I have Telmex level 2 service (599 pesos bundle) and get 3 download and
.5 upload. It use to be 2 download and .3 upload. .09 won't cut it. Majic
jack does not want a fixed IP. It is not majic jacks problem but Telmex DSL
which is not performing as it should. Download is fine for majic jack but your
upload speed is too slow or you have some wierd computer problem. Try
someone elses laptop to see if the speed goes up at that point you know it
is your computer. If the speed is the same with another computer time to
pester Telmex.

To be clear .09 won't cut it with any VOIP products including majicjack, net talk,
vontage, etc etc etc. I will be giving a lecture in January on VOIP products
during the wednesday technology session in the magazine room at LCS from
10am til Noon. First technology lecture will be on Satellite Radio (sirius/XM)
on January 4th. VOIP products demonstration will be later the month.
Z
P.S. Looking for help with Kindle type technology for a Demo. PM me if you want to help me with this demo
sometime in Jan or Feb.

I have no problem with MJ or music or videos - it's a Telmex problem you are having. Get the Telmex tec guy on the phone - they have them that speak English. there is a 800 toll free number on your modem box. I find them very helpful.

MJ seems to be the cheapest and most problematic of the VOIP systems. You get what you pay for. I'd NEVER use it for business, have run into a few people who have and it really gives your business a poor image.

Re: MajikJack Arghhhh
Miracle of miracles it appears my 7th “live agent” session with majicJack resulted in a solution. This is now the morning of the fourth day with service.
Still don’t know what the specific problem was but it appears my software rather than hardware theory was correct.
The one thing the latest agent asked that none of the previous 6 did was, " does your dial pad on the laptop screen display 'stock symbol call' or 'enter number here to call' "?
I indicated my screen read stock number call and the agent took a few seconds and asked me to try to use the phone again. Guess what it worked! S/he wouldn't tell me what, if anything, they'd done to my settings.
I have no idea what these settings on majicJack control. Any ideas???
As for Telmex, they're a real work of art. I've had four technicians out so far. The latest recommendation is to rewire the telephone copper in the house to the wireless modem. Oh well...another day
After 3 days and over ten hours in their call centre I have Shaw satellite service. Fantastic HD reception and all the local channels so I can gloat over the cold and snow in my native Toronto. I especially delight in the traffic reports of 2 hour rush hour backups on highway 401 in the city. Brings back not so fond memories.
Thanks everyone for all your ideas.
