I'd recommend Alberto, he speaks English, can probably give you estimates over the phone and he charges 200 pesos for a house call. We and our tenants have used him for several years and nary a complaint. His cell number is (045) 331 016 4739 and his shop is in Ajijic.

I highly recommend Adrian Ramos. He has done work for me and a few others in Los Arroyos for awhile and keeps up with the latest. Fairly priced. He used to work for Martin at LM@COM until he went out on his own.

ADRIAN RAMOS M. (Speaks English) - Very reasonable

Without a doubt Adrian Ramos is the one. My husband use to do all our computer "stuff", however he is no longer with me. Adrian knows what he is doing without hesitation, meaning he does not just sit there and wonder what the problem might be. He tries every possibility to fix the problem. Haven't had one problem he was not able to fix. I beleive he charges 250 for a house call, however, not sure.

Can you say why you think it's failing?

Thanks, Z, done deal! I'm ready for the crash.

I think it's failing because Benno said it was. AND, it's taking longer and longer to boot and shut down - and load pages. I'm putting it off, all backed up, keeping it on because if I shut it down or the power goes off it may never boot again.

Just want to get my current book's final edit done before turning it over to the geeks.

Sounds like it needs a Windows refresh, and would not be a hard drive failure.

Hard drive is about 6 years old. I'm ready to upgrade it too. Thanks.

No reason to upgrade hard drives unless you need a bigger one, or when it breaks.

I'm not so sure, HelperGuy, MTBF always worries me. I prefer to upgrade *before* it breaks.

Backups, plain and simple. There's no predicting a broken HD, either laptop or tower. S.M.A.R.T. firmware is built into many HDs, but is unreliable at best: can tell you a drive is about to fail, when it's actually the OS having a problem. Just did a Windows reinstall last week, after the HD warned of failure, and it was perfectly okay. A physically worn HD makes a clicking noise, as the disc arm begins to malfunction.

Here's an industry quote :
"Hard drive manufacturers quote average hard drive life as Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF). Ordinary consumer drives are in the 500,000 hour MTBF range, while enterprise (e.g., more expensive) hard drives can range up to 1.5 million hour MTBF. Since there are 8,760 hours in a 24x7 year, 500,000 hour average MTBF is a lot of years. Right? Yeah, 57 years is the answer. The key word in this consumer claim is "average". Real drives last anywhere from fifteen minutes to fifteen years."

We have met the young man who took over from Benno and are very impressed. His name is Miguel Espinosa, same phone, same address.
