OK with money from my birthday in March 1964:
Singles: You really got me, the Kinks and the Last Time: the Stones
L.P: With the Beatles.
I still have them, but cant play them. have them on my Itunes, though!
for those of you that know English money the single were 7 shillings and 6 pence and the LP, 32 shillings and 6 pence (still written on them!)

Forgot about those story book records. My sister and I had Cinderella, Whinny the Pooh, Lone Ranger, Grasshopper and the Ants and probably more. That must have been early '50's. Then the Columbia Record Club in the late '50's

i got into music pretty early as a kid, and because i hung around one of my older cousins alot the first records that I bought with my own money was Kiss- Alive, Black Sabbath-we sold our soul for rock n roll, the Star Wars soundtrack, and Prince-purple rain! LOL! And all at the same time. I remember getting home and my dad just looking at me weird and saying you have to stop hanging out with your cousin! I still remember the first record I played from my dads collection the first time he showed me how to use a record player, i picked out a Hendrix album and I still have it to this day, its here in mexico. My first CD was pink floyd- dark side of the moon, because my dad just got the cd player and a surround sound system....man was that cool sounding!!!!!

Lots of youngsters here .... kind of amazing how you ended up in Mexico so young. Maybe another thread. I mean Kiss and Black Sabbath?

A friend turned me on to Bob Dylan in the early '60's and it took me years to figure out he was the best thing going. I gagged on the first album

That would have been Johnny Ray. singing "Cry"

It may be a myth, but I heard that Johnny actually cried real tears when he sang
that song.
In later years when I went overseas, my mother gave all my old
vinyl records to the church bazaar...which made me cry too.

Album "Twist and Shout", by the Beatles. Their second, chosen by me and my brother with our kiddie allowances pooled, over "With The Beatles" (which we all called Beatlemania) because of the song "Twist and Shout", which I had seen on a clip played by Jack Paar on The Tonight Show after a trip he took to England with his family.

You're right about Johnny Ray...real tears... and he was hearing impaired as well. I remember my mom, aunts, and female cousins all shedding a lot of tears too. For a short time he brought the music world to a standstill.

My latest response somehow went sideways. Rolly, sorry 'bout the "pre vinyl". Live long and proper. Great responses. Check out <cbc.ca/music>. Tons of free music, and I do mean FREE. The "majors" hate it and are suing. Good luck. Type in: "These Eyes", by Burton Cummings. Get romantic with your other. "Do a little dance" da da de dah

Did you mean The Guess Who? Burton Cummings recorded it initially with them before the spin off BTO (Bachman Turner Overdrive) Both great bands. Growing up in 'the Peg in the 60's and 70's I followed Burton's career from his start with Chad Alan and the Expressions to the Guess Who and then solo. Great music!

My first vinyl was Joni Mitchell's "Paved Paradise and Put up a Parking Lot".

Anyone listen to "The Vinyl Cafe" on CBC radio on weekends?

Any Canadians remember Danny Finkleman, of Finkleman's 45s, on CBC radio Saturday nights, until he retired in 2005? If you could stand listening to his lengthy rants in between songs, he played some great old music.

Grizzy - Love Vinyl Cafe. Stuart McLean is a gifted writer and story-teller; I enjoy all the Dave and Morley stories.

And HelperGuy - I, for one, usually enjoyed Danny's "lengthy rants" as you call them. Great music, too.

Hey, Danny could go on for five minutes about the quality of a man's belt. I wanted to hear more music and less Danny.

LOL - you're right. But his affection for whatever the subject happened to be just always seemed so genuine I was usually willing to go along. Not always, for sure. But generally. And sometimes his segues were really quite clever.

If you catch the PBS special on English pop, you'll freak out at the way these guys look now, and all the grandparents in the audience.
