Not easy to get a good weiner here, but there are ways. When you cook your dogs, do you: steam? Pan fry? Broil? Toaster oven? Grille?

And how about the bun? I grew up in Canada, where there are sausage and dog stands all over, and everything is steamed. Not unlike NYC. Steamies are the best!

I like mine BBQ'd and I prefer the smokies or Euorpean wieners.

Did they have any Mr. Tube Steak carts in your part of Canada?

We both grew up in Ontario, the have not province. Everything is steamed, and I agree they are the best, however a european sausage with kraut might be good on a BBQ. I'd still like the bun steamed. For the new fave arrachera burgers with California cheese,, we toast the buns and add butter, etc.

The only tube steak I know about is a song from ZZ Top... Polish and other sausages are best, but sometimes you just want "a dog", you know?

I steam my dog buns in the micro; works pretty well. Like you, E-raq, I prefer my hammo buns toasted.

Being in a select circle of hamburger afficionados with the California cheese and the arrachera patties, I can definitely say that Burger Lake lagged behind our own concoctions.

We prefer Oscar Meyer Hot dogs. We pan fry them but also like BBQ. We don't have a BBQ.

Of course, as any hot dog aficiando knows, the best hot dogs MUST be steamed and only an auslander would dream of charbroling a hot dog weiner. A desecration of the sacred art. Dawg has not had the pleasue of consuming Chicago-style hot dogs in Chicago so I won´t go there but, clearly, New York hot dogs are a disgrace whereever consumed. The best two renditions of this American favorite are:

CHRIS´ HOT DOGS

In Downtown Montgomery in the shadow of the Alabama state capitol on Dexter Avenue near where Martin Luther King was pastor in the 1950s. Started in 1917 and an all-night bar and hangout among the famous as well as a hot dog joint serving up great hot dogs for almost 100 years now. Their chili dogs are to die for. A fabulous place to consume a hot dog with a cold brew and wallow in historical southern charm. Unbeatable. Hank Williams used to eat and drink thre in the 50s and usually they had to haul his drunken ass out of there on a stretcher.

CASPARS

This famous Oakland, California based hot dog chain serves up perhaps the best hot dog in the universe. Their classic is made with a weiner with the skin on and typically consists of a dog with sliced tomatoes, sliced onions, mustard and sweet relish. God, I wish I could get those Caspar´s weiners down here in Mexico where the hot dog weiners are beyond awful.

I have not, in 12 years of living here, found even one decent hot dog weiner ever. Certainly not even one with the skin on which is the most critically important feature of a good hot dog weiner.

I love Mexico and would never love Chicago or Montgomery or Oakland but by God, Mexicans have the second worst hot dogs on earth. The worst being French hot dogs which are beyond inedible.

Then I implore you to try HOFFY'S Hollywood Dogs, available at great expense in the back cooler at SuperLake, or much less for many more at CostCo. No skin, though.

Helper Guy:

I have been playing "the fool" with the ice in my beer thing for quite some time. Give me Tequila or Rum and I will do the dance but beer isn't high on my list. Here we are in the middle of December and all the beers that I have consumed (counted on my two hands) in 2012 were in Mexico and every single one of them had ice cubes in the glass. They must be super cold to quench my thirst on a hot day.

My Mexico secret: knock back two cold ones as fast as you can. This quenches your thirst, fills you up, and lets you then nurse a mixed drink for at least an hour. Saves money, too.

I have fond memories of "Shopsy's/ Shopsies ? (sic) foot long hot dogs at the CNE (Canadian National Exhibition) in Toronto, in my youth. They were probably steamed. They were also sold at Maple Leaf Gardens at "Leaf" games. Yum. Didn't know then that 1 hotdog = your salt quotient for the week, same for most "fast food". Damn

Ice cubes in beer. That really improves a fine vintage Bordeaux as well. When we visit Teotitlan del Valle, Oaxaca, our hosts always serve room temperature Corona but when they visit us at our home they insist on XX Lager cold from the refri. I´m not much of a beer drinker but the best beer on the planet comes from Belgium - no contest.

A Belgian beer and Casper´s hot dog make a fine meal together. Worth even returning temporarily to Oakland for that combination.

One can buy Belgian beer in Guadalajara at one of the top notch liquor stores up there but it´s pricy. Worth every centavo.
