Before the Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem were famous, they used to perform at a small club in Greenwich Village. I don't remember the name of the club, but they were the opening act for the main performer, whose name I also do not remember. They were great and we used to take the subway down to the Village to see them almost every week. I still remember, though, most of the words of every song.
Thanks, Arbon, for posting this.

Could it have been McSorley's...they performed there before Tommy Makem started his own pub on 14th St., called the Irish Pavilion. Was it before or after their appearance on the Ed Sullivan show? 1962?

Re: Brussel Sprouts
Hi, it was neither of those clubs. It was definitely before Tommy Makem had his own place. Remember that they were not the main act, but opening for a blues ot gospel singer when I first saw them. It must have been before they were on Ed Sullivan. Also it was before I graduated from CCNY in '61.

Re: Brussel Sprouts
They all first got together in '56, but Paddy and Tommy were doing clubs and warm ups prior to that to supplement their acting careers.
I recently got a copy of the documentary dvd "The Yellow Bittern - The Life and Times of Liam Clancy". It's a wonderful 2 hr. video about the whole group but unfortuantely only on PAL format for Europe, so you need a PAL player and a DVC for No. American tv's. It went quite a bit into the affair Liam had with the wealthy NY socialite (can't remember her name), that wanted to be the saviour of Irish traditional music.
