Just out of curiosity, has anyone seen split peas at the little shop beside Gossip's? I wanna make pea soup with leftover ham.

They sell them at SuperLake in the packaged goods by the deli, and at Soriana with the packaged beans.

Don't know about the store next to Gossips.

SL has some nice yellow ones as well as the green. Probably fresher than the 1000 year old packages at Soriana.

I cook.
Also, at SL, there are some really pretty pink lentils that came out so creamy and yummy.

You cook? Cool. I'd like to be part of a little cooking group that doesn't have contests, and most importantly, that never meets. Just a few like-minded folks... for example, I cook a lot, and have some good recipes I've perfected, but will never, ever claim that I'm good enough to be considered anything more than that.

I cook a lot too. Used to cook professionally years ago and have recently got back into it (after mega burnout) due to being diagnosed with celiac. Since there is gluten is just about everything I have to make a lot of my own stuff - cereals, condiments, sauces, etc. Which has actually become fun again, creative, and so much tastier and healthier.

A group that doesn't require my presence sounds good, but then . . . for what? grin

If you're talking about my comment, not facetious at all, just teasing you.

No, my comment was facetious, lol. It IS this board, after all...

But slainte, there's no butter in my recipe.

Okay, I got lucky and got a parking spot in front of the grains store... but it was closed... didn't stop long enough to see if there were hours posted. Did get yellow split-peas at SL, $45/500 gr. Also saw small, pink "split peas"... .

Oh good.
Not split peas, mislabeled. They know. They are pink lentils. creamy little buggers too
Let me know if the yellow are much different in flavor than the greens, haven't used them in a long time and as I recall they may not retain their yellow color.

I thought there might be something up with the pinks. I could not find any greens, although this colour reminds meof Habitant Pea Soup, so I will let you know. (They carry Habitant, but the price is OMG.)

Started my soup with a hambone and a bag of yellow split peas from SL; halfway through I realized I needed more. I had added my soaked peas and tasted; yum. After I put the second load of soaked peas, the soup took on a very peculiar smell. Not exactly "stale"; more like chemical, or plastic. It tastes good, but the smell is off-putting. I'm wondering what happened.

Chris:

Now we can accuse you of being a "name dropper"! Pea Soup Andersons is nothing more than a money making machine and the family sure guessed right on that one.

I think Anderson's Pea Soup became sort of a Knott's Berry Farm after a few years. Probably lucrative for them but I never was impressed with their original soup and restaurant.

Hmm, interesting. Can't imagine what happened. The expected thing would be that the first load of peas had cooked longer than the second and might be more tender. . .were they from the same bag? Maybe the second load needs to cook longer? Don't know about the smell. . .

Two bags... cooked both about the same. Second bag puffed up more and was very foamy, now that I think about it.

Actually, from a CostCo spiral ham I bought a few weeks ago. That ham made a lot of meals and sandwiches, and I froze the bone until yesterday.

I purchased some pretty good looking beef bones from Tony's yesterday for my next soup.
