Here's a "gringo" who certainly appreciates one of those "canciones romänticas" suggested by my friend...

Oh, give me a break! Don't you ever get tired of listening to that sentimental crap from a bygone era?

Re: Romantic songs
NEVER! I grew up with Kern, Porter, Rodgers & Hart & Hammerstein always on the record player. Most of the songs from the '50's on are IMHO boring, predictable and forgettable crap (with the exception of Sondheim & some Weber)...Junk like Mame, Hello Dolly, and How much IS that doggy in the window? Hammerstein was a great humanitarian and gave us words that made us reflect, like this one:Smartalex wrote:Oh, give me a break! Smartypants, you never fail to educate me...I had not made the connection between Bonnie & her legendary father John Raitt!

Well, now you know the awful truth about Bonnie Raitt's disgraceful upbringing.

Re: Romantic songs
Actually Bonnie is a very nice person. I had to introduce her at a company function once.
She is very funny in private. She was laughing at me when I was telling people the cops
were outside waiting for the drunks and she came on and said just don't leave to everybody
and went into a song. LOL pretty much undid anything I said .

Re: Romantic songs
I was so saddened to learn of GBA's own deprived childhood (what with being forced to listen to show tunes 24/7) that I decided to put together a little retrospective of what he missed during the 1950s.
Well, there was this guy named Chuck Berry...

Ah Alex....your concern for my cultural depravation is appreciated, however not necessary. I'm well aware of all those you mentioned and if I'd been forced to grow up in a home listening to Lawrence Welk I too may have fled to the vast cultural wasteland of the lowest common denominator, musically speaking. In addition to show tunes, their was a lot of romantic classics and big band..Miller, Goodman, etc...but by grade school I had outgrown even that... That was when Bill Haley, Gene Vincent et al, became all the rage with most of my peers. I joined the Columbia Record Club in the 8th grade & the first record I bought was this:
From there, myself and a few other eclectic weirdos really got into the California cool jazz thing...formed a band, played a few gigs, but finally succumbed to the popular craze of rock & roll. As I look at the current music scene, it appears that the lowest common denominator rule...still rules.
