Lirio Empty Lirio

The good news is that it appears they opened the dams again. The bad news is as of this morning there is now a 50' wide swath of Lirio along the shores of the Ajijic Malecon and a lot more floating in the middle on it's way to shore.

The lirio gets a bum rap. If we just left it alone, it would act as shade, keeping the water cooler and reducing evaporation during the dry season.

I think you are incorrect. The Lirio is an invasive species and left unchecked would eventually blanket the entire lake and turn it into a swamp.

So you clean it up once a year...for instance, at the beginning of the rainy season. Then you let it accumulate during the rainy season and hang around during the dry season in order to help keep the evaporation rate down.

Sure you could control it instead of eradicating it however, this is Mexico, where would the funds come from to "properly manage" this blight on an on-going basis? In fact, they tried managing it a few years ago and only ended up with a rotting stinking mess on the beaches. It is far cheaper and easier to just spray the whole lot with round-up and let it sink to the bottom. This species of lirio is apparently not even native to the lake.

Our lagoon here is Melaque is full of lirio and it acts as our only sewer treatment "plant" because the real treatment plant died years ago.

About 2007 they brought in a huge floating lawn mower that chopped it up.   They gave up quickly on that one
