Just wait till New Years Eve, there will be street parties all over the town, each trying to out do the other ones. I plan on 10,000 watts of sound at mine. Come on over and join us. The more the merrier.
Re: WTF...Music Concert till 3 AM...come on!
You can't CHOOSE to live in another country and then complain about the local customs. It's rude, arrogant and ultimately pointless. I'm not a big fan of late loud music and seemingly endless cohetes, but you have to accept (and perhaps one day learn to love) the whole package.

Re: WTF...Music Concert till 3 AM...come on!
The trouble is that many are out of the loop here. Noise is a big deal right now among the Mexico City intelligentsia and environmental groups. Mexico is a left wing country, with a strong left wing party in power - these groups have plenty of respect, power and influence. They are now discussing, and I find this interesting, the concept of 'heritage' and cultural sounds - which are unique to certain areas, and should be preserved for future generations. They are calling the rest of it 'noise pollution', and it is a Federal law which imposes limits of 68 decibels during the day, and 62 at night. It definitely is being enforced in Mexico City, Queretaro, Merida and Puerto Vallarta. New nightclubs have to install elaborate sound traps. There is now plenty of evidence that loud is very bad for your health and harmful to the environment. Just like the new drinking/driving laws - they start in Mexico City, and spread if they are successful (the annual number of deaths from drinking/driving dropped over 50% since rigid enforcement). Unfortunately, or fortunately, depending on your point of view, it will take some time to reach the tiny town of Chapala/Ajijic. In the meantime, Chapala depends heavily on the income from 'evento' fees, it is just too tempting of a revenue to ignore.

I am one of those that has learned to love the Mexican customs. The noise and rockets does not bother me and in fact, I contribute to it. I am a supporter of the farmers and because of that they showed up at my house on Wednesday morning at a little bit after 6 a.m. with a 20 piece band that serenaded me and of course my neighbors also. I then joined the group and walked all over Ajijic with the band as they serenaded other supporters.
Re: WTF...Music Concert till 3 AM...come on!
You're being far too judgmental. We are talking about noise that is out of the boundaries of tradition. When the local priest insists on broadcasting our follies on a daily basis, loudly enough so that the whole town can here--in direct opposition to the church's specific orders--that is not a "local custom". When the party goes on until 3, that is not a "local custom". Otherwise the laws here would reflect that, and currently they state that 1 am on a weekend is the cut-off.You can't CHOOSE to live in another country and then complain about the local customs. It's rude, arrogant and ultimately pointless. I'm not a big fan of late loud music and seemingly endless cohetes, but you have to accept (and perhaps one day learn to love) the whole package.
You're also assuming that nothing has changed since the beginning of "tradition", but it sure as hell has. There were lots of reasons how these traditions crept in, and they were before we had electricity and loudspeakers and motorized vehicles and easy access to bands and fireworks. There's a book called There's A Word For It In Mexico by deMente that illuminates a lot of how Mexico got to be the way it is. I recommend reading this before one starts pontificating over the rest of us.
Most of us do love the "whole package", but that doesn't mean we have to shut up when the morons take over.

Re: WTF...Music Concert till 3 AM...come on!
The other big change we are living through is that now many are entering Mexico as "Permanent Residents". This is the new word for immigrant - people are leaving their home countries to immigrate to Mexico. This does give you some rights, and perhaps even the expectation, of contributing to the general community. Which of course many do. The trouble is that Mexico is a heirarchy based culture, not the multicultural base of Canada or the U.S.A. (real or imagined). The higher you are up the pyramid, the more power, wealth and political connection you have - the more you are allowed to do anything your want. If a rich, powerful man wants to show off with a big, expensive evento - nothing is going to stop him. Likewise the Catholic Church has huge political and cultural power. If a group of Hare Krishna started banging their tambourines - they would be run out of town within the hour!

In my opinion, the morons are those foreigners who choose to live in town and then bitch about the noise. They should move to the country or back where they came from.HelperGuy wrote:Most of us do love the "whole package", but that doesn't mean we have to shut up when the morons take over. You can't CHOOSE to live in another country and then complain about the local customs. Barking dogs and crowing roosters disturb my sleep more than any rockets. I don't think that most of the morons are advocating killing the dogs and chickens.
Love it or leave it. Or shut up about Mexico.

Here is an exhibit of Mexican "aural heritage". This guy actually gets paid to do this for a living - another reason I love Mexico - enjoy.

My point is that I don't think any foreigners residing in Mexico have a right to comment on Mexicans and the way they live their lives. They are here as guests and they should not insult their hosts.
Re: WTF...Music Concert till 3 AM...come on!
Point taken, but I wouldn't call complaints about specific out-of-bounds issues "insulting our hosts". It's not a blanket complaint comprising the whole country or a tradition.

Re: WTF...Music Concert till 3 AM...come on!
Complaining about noise in Mexico is about the same as complaining about "thunder and lightning". Complain about a drunk neighbors noise at 3am, the police arrive, talk for awhile and then they leave.
The neighbor then turns the noise up a few more decibels and continues.
North of the border, if your grass while growing is suspected of causing an environmental change. You are subpeoned to court, have to hire a few lawyers. Pay a fine & lawyers and return the grass to its original form. And continue to live waiting for the next episode!
Glad to be here!

Last time I was in DF a bunch of Hare Krishna wer banging on their drums and nothing happened to them, the people on the street (I Madero) were just listening and watching. Mexicans are way more tolerant of noice than other people.
This morning we are at the MP reporting a crime and the tv was blasting to the point it was difficult to hear the questions..noise is the preferred background.

That is beautifully phrased!brigitte wrote:noise is the preferred background.
Mexico is not a quiet country. Even at 3 a.m. sometimes. Another important thing to note, I think, is that Mexicans operate on a very different clock than people from the U.S. or, I presume, Canada. Even with meal times. Who says 3 am is unreasonable?
If you didn't know this stuff before you moved here it's not their fault. It may have come as an unpleasant surprise to you once you arrived, but oh well.
Get over it, get on with it, or get earplugs.

The municipal, state and federal governments say it is unreasonable. One must assume they are Mexicans, too.

Re: WTF...Music Concert till 3 AM...come on!
This subject and the attempts at politically correct rationalizations crack me up! When those who protest start using terms like "morons" or is it really "maroons", and then claim that laws and the Mexican Government are on their side - to me it is just another attempt to "refine" the Country and its Citizens.

Yes. And Mexicans have always demonstrated tremendous respect for how their government tells them to live their lives.HelperGuy wrote:The municipal, state and federal governments say it is unreasonable. One must assume they are Mexicans, too.

Yes, and you could presume that they are also old and when you are old you don't like loud music. One of the main reasons I decided to move permanently to Mexico is that there is a greater sense of freedom here.HelperGuy wrote:The municipal, state and federal governments say it is unreasonable. Maybe that quote belongs in the music section, but it sums up how I feel about living here.

I don't get it. What's the problem here? Things have quieted down late at night to a considerable extent since the new municipal noise law went into effect a few years ago. So what if they let the stage shows run late for a few nights during the San Andrés fiesta? The stage shows in Chapala run even later and LOUDER during carnaval.

Re: WTF...Music Concert till 3 AM...come on!
I think it is a question of old folks versus young folks. When I was a kid fiestas and dances went till 4 or 5 am, I would rarely get home before 6am during festivals but now I would not dream of spending the whole night up and listen to loud music all night.
For Christmas and New Year my family still parties all night including my 92 year old mother who cannot make it past 4 am and here I am at 67 who cannot make it past 12..I think we are all going to hell and are getting old before our time...

In my opinion, it is just a question of jealousy.
I wish I could still party all night long, but even though I can't, I am still glad that others can.
I love living here, and if others don't like fiestas, they know what they can do.
