Help me understand - PLEASE

What possible distorted logic or reason (or lack thereof) is there in forcing signons simply to see if anything new is posted? I've never understood that and maybe someone could explain that in terms I can get my hands around. If you want a closed club, or a "band of sisters" like one of our members, then set up membership by invitation only, otherwise leave it open.

I'm sure I'm missing something really totally logical and really huge, once it's explained I'll be sure and apply it to the weather station so only "members" can see what it's like outside their front doors.

It's more for security than anything else. Guests can only see certain subjects and buttons. They can't see most of the topics where a lot of the personal chatter takes place or take advantage of some of the buttons.

- This protects the members privacy to some degree.
- This keeps any banned members from being able to lurk on these topics.

These forums can be set so guests can't see anything without signing up but thats taking things too far.

If you click the "always log me on option" then its really easy to check for new posts and you don't have to log-in every time.

Ok, how about I set the weather station so only people in Texas, Colorado and Ontario can see, what sense does that make? Or, I should DEFINITELY block anyone on the chapala board and I REALLY REALLY don't want any of the Frenchies from Quebec seeing how nice the weather is here, they might want to come down.

Maybe I don't want everyone to know I'm "signed in" - and this board doesn't allow anonymous sign in.

As far as security, good grief, who could possibly care what goes on with a bunch of cranky old gringos? It wasn't broke, so why "fix" it?

If you guys want a "by invitation only" board, then let me know and I'll have to default to Groucho's wisdom "I wouldn't want to be a member of a club who would accept me as a member".

Actually in the profile area you can set yourself to "hidden" and no one can see when you on-line. This is like anonymous if you prefer. It's under Profile---preferences------hide your on-line status. Just check the yes box and hit save.

Bob, I agree with MartyGraw. It's your board, and if you want to make changes, it's your say-so. You won't hear any complaints from me unless you open the door to the politics and/or religion people.

Sorry, guess I'm still "not getting it" - these boards, the weather etc are done as a public service, we take on the responsibility for the "public good", having private sections smacks of "good ole boy" stuff to me and as I told Bob when he added the weather link it's done as a public service, no one is excluded, maybe I'm missing something?
