need US Tax person Empty need US Tax person

Post by Flamingo Fri Jan 23, 2015 3:48 pm

We have been happily using the Ajijic Tax Man for several years but he is not going to be doing taxes this year for health reasons. We used another popular tax person previously with not-so-good results. Two questions: Are there any other good tax preparers in the area? If I just use Turbo-Tax, can I mess up our return badly or is it easy to use?

Thanks

We use nothing but Turbo Tax. It deals with expat issues fine. $19.95. Our investments 1099 go in automatically these days. State tax forms extra as we have no state income tax in Washington. Once you get Turbo Tax trained its pretty easy. Maybe ask for help the first time with someone who has done it before.

TurboTax online is very easy and is a Q&A process which makes all the decisions for you, eliminates whatever you do not need and also keeps your record from year to year. You will like it better than any flesh and blood tax preparer.

Having used Turbo Tax for years, I read this a few weeks ago and starting wondering if this would be my last...

The article was in Forbes, 1/09/2015 "Irate TurboTax Users Can Get Free Upgrades Or HR Block Substitute"

TaxACT is free and easy to use. Suggested on the IRS site.  It checks and rechecks your results.  Just finished mine for the 4th year.  Download and work at leisure. I started Turbo Tax thru my bank web site and it was going to cost more than my tax man was charging

I've used TaxAct online for 3 years, it imports my data from the previous year, but starting out, of course, you will have to enter everything. It also does my taxes for Arizona, which is my US address. Oh, and TaxAct files online for me and confirms receipt by the IRS and the state. I then print out the completed forms and the receipts. Once I have all the info at hand, it takes me maybe half the afternoon to do the whole process. And I have no math or accounting skills and not many computer skills.

The problem with tax people who don't do it full time is they can't keep up with the yearly changes. I have a friend here that used to work for his dads tax company and he just gave up trying to keep up
