Vacation Rentals in U.S. Dollars

A general question from a newbie. Next week I'm going to be a Canuck in Mexico and wondering why I must pay for my vacation rental equivalent in US dollars? Just trying to understand the rationale, seeing as I can't use US currency anywhere else.

The property must be owned by a gringo.

If it is the rule from the owner you can speak with him or his manager but if you do not come to an agreement you will have go by that rule or find another place.
You get the same thing in Mexico city in some of the hotels at least there , there are lots of places who quote in pesos.

You can usually pay in pesos. Just do the math for the exchange rate from USD to Pesos.

The prices are in USD and can be paid in pesos at the exchange rate of the day. No one usually expects or wants actual US currency.

You can do your shopping at SuperLake, where the prices are in pesos, and pay with USD, probably a lot of other places as well.  You can go either direction with the currencies in a lot of places, and as RV says, just do the math.
The only real "rule" is that anything priced in USD in Mexico, is that pesos can be substituted at the current exchange rate, so you don't really have to carry USD around.
Your landlord has to accept pesos at the current exchange rate....that's the law.

Yes that is the law but he does not want to do it, are you going to ruin your vacations or move on..

Then go to Intercam or CI and get the dollars if you don't want to make an issue over it, even though you may be right.  
I even think there is an ATM where you can get dollars....like HSBC.

Think of it as a more stable reference point. However, if the landlord insists on USD, you have the right to pay in pesos. Simple, huh?

Because most vacationers come from the US and don't think in terms of pesos. If the rental owner priced it in pesos, the first question they'd have to answer - and they'd have to answer it every time - is, "How much is that in dollars?"

Correct, as historically the USD has been more stable than the peso.  Mexicans has for years have squirreled away USD.

Actually most people around here now a days come from Canada however as RV and Slainte pointed out the USD is the currency that is the most stable.

BMW, If you travel to any other Latin American countries you will find similar situations with the prices in USD.

If by "now a days" you mean February, well then yes, maybe. ¡Bienvenidos Ontarians! jajajaja. (Though we could well see a surge of Bostonians soon. Poor goobers.)

But I bet over the course of a year, there are still far more visitors from the US than Canada.

Perhaps however the majority of the guests in my casita's and at the B&B next door are Canadian the past 2 years. I would say about 60/40. The good news is that I've had about 10 sets of guests move here permanently after their visit, both from the US and Canada.
