Recent medical experience

Sometimes things happen for no apparent reason. I developed ITP(idiopathic thrombocytopenia), had to take large doses of prednisone that caused necrosis of my femur head which led to a hip arthroplasty. 
I see a lot of people in Mexico walking around with hip problems(I tend to notice these things) and wonder how many of these could be surgically corrected

This brings me to another question:  are some of the medications being prescribed doing more harm than good?  I always go to the Mayo clinic site when prescribed a new medication and often find it's not supposed to be given to any older (than 60) person and\or has some very undesirable side effects.
