I looked up the word, "oregano" in two dictionaries and could find no definition of "Oregano" And I felt frustrated. Then I tried looking it up on my computer and it said

Oregano: A Versatile Herb
Oregano is a fragrant herb from the mint family that adds flavor to many cuisines, especially Italian, Mexican, and Spanish dishes.

??? I think we all know what oregano is, Pete. What does that have to do with the OP's question?

It's in nearly every store that sells groceries, herbs and spices in Mexico. Fresh is available in many as well. Both are extremely common in Mexican cuisine.

Sorry mudgirl. I had no idea what it was. In fact I don't remember ever hearing that word. And the word was not in either of my two rather larger English dictionaries. Oh well. I kind of sort of understand the word now. And I perhaps naïvely thought that most folk reading the post needed to know what it was. If I was wrong, I am sorry :)

I like Terana brand spices available SL and other places. Badia is good too, cheaper usually and at Soriana.

Lopez's frutería sells no-name spices in jars that I assume they break down from larger containers.

Have seen fresh at El Torito and SL but I really don't look for it.

@Pete....if you eat pizza either in Mexico or in US or in Canada, you've had oregano as it's in almost all red pizza sauces.

Well, I find that rather bizarre. It's one of the most common herbs, used all over the world, in many different cuisines. It's like someone saying they never heard of cinnamon, or paprika. What's even more bizarre was that it wasn't in your dictionaries.

Some recipes call for Mexican oregano if available. I have never tried Mexican but apparently it has a different flavor than regular dried oregano like McCormicks.

Regular oregano is an Italian and Mediterranean spice with minty undertones. It matches perfectly with dishes from that region. You will commonly find it added to pasta sauces, grilled meats and pizza. Mexican oregano has lemon and citrus flavors as well as some tones of licorice.

Terena brand is Hecho en Mexico.

Badia is made in US however it is Hispanic-owned.  Badia was the main brand I saw in Food City grocery chain in AZ, FC is a store that carries a LOT of Mexican foods and majority of shoppers were often Mexican or of Mexican descent.

The Bisbee Safeway carried Badia brand perhaps in deference to the MXN nationals who crossed the border (just a few miles away) from Sonora to shop in US.

sm1mex- Maybe go to a nursery and buy a Mexican oregano plant, then you'll always have some on hand. Can grow it in the garden or a pot. Oregano isn't a fussy plant to grow.
