Don´t get ripped off paying too much for your smog check

Many places apparently are quoting over the legal limit for the required smog check and sticker for Jalisco plated cars. The law regulates the maximum a shop can charge and it is up to 4 times the minimum wage for gas vehicles or $242 pesos or up to 5 times the minimum wage for diesel vehicles $303 pesos.

Artículo 72. El costo por los servicios de la verificación vehicular para el Estado de Jalisco, se regirá
bajo los siguientes términos:

VERIFICACIÓN A VEHICULOS QUE USEN
GASOLINA, GAS LICUADO DE PETRÓLEO, GAS
NATURAL U OTROS COMBUSTIBLES ALTERNOS
Hasta por la cantidad máxima de 4 días de
salario mínimo general vigente en el Estado.

VERIFICACIÓN A VEHÍCULOS QUE USEN DIESEL
COMO COMBUSTIBLE
Hasta por la cantidad máxima de 5 días de
salario mínimo general vigente en el Estado.

I realize that, but they sometimes pull over foreign plated vehicles for not having the smog check. And do you really think Mexicans driving those piece of crap cars blowing out all kinds of stuff care about the atmosphere. The police should be pulling them over and ticketing them. Look at GDL and it's smog problem. Sometimes the horizon is brown like LA.

Which is yet another reason why I believe Jalisco is going to change their vehicle importation policies for expats. I think they will eventually put a time limit on how long your foreign plated car can be in the country. Your choice will be to either nationalize it or take it back out after 6 months or a year........

Just what we need, more stupid rules that they can make to make it harder for foreigners to live here. The Mexican Gov't is great at shooting itself in the foot, then they cry Tourism is down. They have so many laws and rules here, it's getting ridiculous.

As far as the requirement for foreign plated cars the law says it is voluntary ALTHOUGH the traffic law states

Artículo 72.- Los vehículos no registrados en el Estado y que permanezcan por más de seis meses en el mismo, deberán satisfacer los requisitos exigidos por esta Ley y su reglamento; si su permanencia en el Estado es por menos tiempo, sólo deberán acreditar los requisitos exigidos en el lugar de su procedencia

Article 72.- Vehicles not registered in the state that remain in the state for more than 6 continuous months ought to satisfy the requirements of this law and ordinance; if the time in the state is less than 6 months then the vehicle only needs to comply with the requirements of the state it is from.


So to avoid problems and be safe foreign plated cars should get the smog cert as you would have to prove you didn´t live here 6 months straight which could be hard to do especially if your vehicle import sticker is expired.

Wow, those prices are as much and more for the AirCare test here in BC, which, I believe, has just been ended.

Then why are you here? If you need help packing for a move NOB I am sure you'll find plenty of helping hands from this board.

It may not be a legal necessity, but we got that sticker on our foreign plated car while we had it, and got less attention from the local cops.

Foreign plated car, no sticker, zero attention from police. Over 7 years here. chico
