What is this? (photo of car part)

Post by Ms.Thang on Mon Aug 06, 2012 11:40 am

Does anyone know what this is, at the right of the photo? It is on the front passenger side of my truck. There is crumbly foam like stuff that i can just pick off. the same part on the other side just has an empty cup like thing. It doesn't look right.

I am about to go to the mechanic again and I don't trust him to tell me what it is.

Thanks.

Supply a bigger picture to gain some context to the parts seen, and where this is relative to the rest of the car...

At this point in time, I wouldn't trust your mechanic. Period. When you find out what it is, take the info back to your mechanic with another mechanic as an observer. I think you've been shafted.

You need to back off just a bit with the camera. I hope you took this picture BEFORE the new shocks were put in because the shocks look old. Right now I'm only guessing but it could be part of the sway bar???

CBob can answer you better.

Dodge Ram 1500, 2000 model. it is definitely some kind of foam or rubber. I don't think this is one of the parts that was supposed to be replaced. I just want to know what it is.
I have decided to have another mechanic look at the truck before I take it back to car City ( where the warranty is)
When you click on the thumbnail it will take you to an album with 4 pictures. One is the Brazo Pittman. It looks like the rubber part of it that separates the new looking part on the bottom and the old rusty part on the top. is old and that part should be new for sure. I dont know if the upper part is part of the brazo pittman or not.

It looks like what is left of a rotten old rubber hose that had a metal fitting on the one end. Does your air conditioning work?

Well, Mike the Mechanic appeared in the office like an angel straight from heaven and pronounced my truck suspension to be fine and dandy. I feel much better.

The rotten , animal nest looking thing is part of the suspension and was at one time a rubber stop , is nitow unnecessary since I don't carry loads anymore.

Evidently, when you do suspension work you need to tighten the bolts with the car on the ground, not up on a lift like mine was probably done because it's just easier that way. So we are going to do just that and not worry about the stupid truck anymore.

I'll second Mike the Mechanic too!
When we bought our "new to us" car, we had him check it out. The weird noise from the muffler was a broken baffle which vibrated only when the air conditioner was on. We opted to replace the muffler at Nissan in Guadalajara but THEY insisted there was nothing wrong with the muffler. We had someone stand there while they replaced it with the part that we had ordered...noise gone. Mike really knows his stuff....and, he could've fixed the problem with a small screw but we opted for a more permanent fix.

He does not have a shop exactly, so he is limited to certain types of repairs. He will come and do the work at your house, if possible, or you can bring your car to him in Ixtlauacan.
I don't know his exact adress but you can call him.

if that is supposed to be a bumpstop then you do need it replaced. When you hit a pothole or speedbump hard enough, that little piece of rubber can help you not break or bend suspension parts. I find it weird thats what that is supposed to be because they are usually attatched to your frame. And also, you can tighten all the bolts with the car in the air.....you have to torque all the nuts to specific numbers.

It is called a Timbren kit and is considered a suspension enhancment product for performance vehicles.

Timbren Kits - Typical Applications
Snow Plows and Snow Removal Equipment
Towing Trailers - landscape trailers, horse trailers, etc.
Recreational Vehicles - RVs, motorhomes, campers
Towing & Wreckers
Emergency Vehicles - Ambulances, Fire trucks and service vehicles
Agricultural Vehicles

You could be right about the high speed pot hole hitting, and heaven knows those speed bumps can appear out of nowhere, but really I just don't drive this truck like that anymore. I still think it couldn't happen without a load and I have never ever bottomed out on the suspension on that truck. Never the less, I have been looking at the kits on line and might order a basic model and have Mike put it on, especially if I ever decide to move my camper trailer.

If you google the issue about tightening the bolts on new suspension on the ground you will be able to read some of the arguments about that. It seems that most agree that the bolts should be hand tightened untill the weight of the vehicle is on the ground. Some mechanics don't bother to do that because it's just easier to do it in the air than on your back on the gtround. But there is a reason for doing it at full weight instead of at full droop...That there is mechanic talk, yall. Uh huh.

I can not believe that I am able to discuss this subject at any length at all, but I'm kinda into it. It is not as complicated as I always thought it was, and Mike is very good at explaining things in a way that is easy to understand. Utube has a video about everything and that helps too.

I totally trust Mike too. I'm going to have him do some major work and I wanted some minor work done too. He said he'd be happy to do the minor electric window work but I could get it done cheaper at a place in Chapala where he directed me to. Amazing.

He's just moved to a bigger place up the hill and will be able to accommodate car repairs there as needed.
