"I can deal with negative feedback, but arbitrary bitterness had me wondering."
-- Briantroy

We all wonder and deal with it in our own ways. Many have learned to just ignore it and move on. Anyway, I am glad you hung in there and got the kinds of responses you were hoping for. I second SmartAlex´s comment: You have the right attitude and that is most important.

Nice to hear from a woman and not be attacked. I just wanted to make sure I got a feel for the area. I might want to spend time there.

Thanks, Lady Ott

Brian, as with most "un-censored style" forums there are a few forum members here who make "arbitrary bitterness" their hobby. Occasionally they do offer a helpful little tidbit about life here in México but for the most part they are attention seeking and/or shit disturbing. You quickly learn who they are and ignore them.

You may want to check out San Antonio when you're here. Much closer to Walmart! Very Happy

Yes, Brian, be SURE to spend some time in San Antonio Tlayacapan. I lived there for several years and loved it. Spend some time around the plaza area and walk down to the malecon. Just meander through the streets and check out the businesses and village life. Mario´s restaurant is a bit west of the plaza on Ramon Corona and has excellent food -- as does the little place across the street from the plaza. His taco stand opens around 5 p.m. He makes pazole on Tuesdays. Across the street from Mario´s and a few doors west is a restaurant that is open only on Saturday and Sunday late afternoons/evenings. Delicious and inexpensive food. They make their pazole on Saturday.

I am pretty sure that the Annual Shriners RibFest will be on Wednesday March 5th - we're waiting confirmation....

It's the day after Mardi Gras and you will be guaranteed a good time with great food.

You will also be just down the road, 2 blocks or so, from the American Legion Post 7. No need for membership but we do have a beer or two. Also, if you are in to fun, Christiania Park is just past the Legion and we have volleyball games on Tuesday and Saturdays starting at 10am. Look and ask anyone. They know where we are.

You may feel a little more adventurous than that, Brian. Don't know if you're a drinking man, but let me suggest a little walking tour of the local bars. Your hotel is just two blocks from El Gato Negro, an old school Mexican cantina at the corner of Zaragoza and Lopez Cotilla. Have a couple of drinks while you wait for Cenaduria Elba to open. It's just across the street from El Gato. They open around 7 p.m. Best Mexican food in town. Be sure to order a mini size pozole so you'll have room left for the tacos al pastor. Once you've got a full belly, walk back to the plaza. On the south side of the plaza you will find La Cantina de Don Manuel near the corner of Morelos and Madero. It's a nice clean bar...and very friendly. If you feel like making one more stop on the way home, drop into Los Equipales, which is next to the main church along Madero. It's a little hole in the wall but, again, clean and friendly. This will leave you two blocks from the hotel. How's your Spanish? You will need it every step of the way.

Smartalex is both mind reader and poet. I do enjoy tippling and I do enjoy good home-style Mexican food. These are the things I seek. I haven't seen much on fish tacos (I'm from San Diego) but I am sure they are around. My personal favorite is Sculpin (Poison Fish/Scorpion Fish) dipped in panko and fried in a cast iron skillet on a fire and then placed in handmade tortillas with pico, salsa blanco  (whipped mayo and sour cream) shredded cabbage and a squeeze of lime. I have considered living in Baja, but I seek a "truer" Mexico.,,something more mole.

"El Gato Negro, an old school Mexican cantina" I have been in a few cantinas, does this have the swinging doors and open at 0600?

Andale! I would stop in for a moning Bloody Maria before my Spanish class in San Miguel de Allende. And then again after. We had a running joke in that the bartender would show me a deck of cards with baked ladies. Each day was a new lady and I would proclaim each day "Mi hermana! Que pasa?" Awesome pic!

Would this be the saloon you hung out in while you were in San Miguel de Allende:

Bar San Miguel has to be one of the most photographed buildings in San Miguel de Allende and here is another just down the street:

Nice pic. Mine was a literal hole about 3 blocks from the plaza and I would nod to the cop on the corner every 0700 before my eye opener/taxi ride to class. Just south of the plaza if I remember. My Spanish is conversational at best, Smartalex. I have a near perfect accent but struggle conjugating verbs at times. Dad is from Ciudad Juarez and mom is from Kentucky. I am a San Diego native and grew up hearing Spanish my entire life. Despite that and 2 years high school, 2 years college, immersion school in San Miguel de Allende and living in TJ for 6 months, it still hasn't sunk in. Part of my reason for coming to Chapala is my desire to actually learn Spanish fluently.
