Ajijic pronunciation redux
Just an FYI for anyone interested:
A snipped from Dane Chandos book VILLAGE IN THE SUN published in the early 1940's where she sounds out and explains the hows and whys of pronouncing "Ajijic".
"Ajijic. Say Ach-ich-ee, with the ch as in Scottish loch, and the tonic accent on the last syllable. By the rules of Spanish the final c should be pronounced, but when anyone pronounces it, we Ajijiquenses know he is a stranger hereabouts. The name used to be written Axixique, a Spanish corruption of a Nahuatl name that means The Place Where the Water Springs."
The book is a great read and available free online.

Re: Ajijic pronunciation redux
Hola, Bob. Can you provide a link to finding this book free online? I haven't had any luck in an exhaustive 3-minute search. Thanks.
Duckie, just returned from Lakeside to Missouri, where an ice storm looms tomorrow. Sheesh.

Re: Ajijic pronunciation redux
There was no Spanish corruption of the word. Nahuatl was not a written language and the Spanish had to write the words via phonetics in the same manner that other languages of different alphabets are transliterated. The x was used for the phoneme -sh which wasn't found in Castellano but quite commonly used in Nahuatl. Over time the letter x has been replaced by the letter j in many words in Mexico. And the final c is used by most Mexicans regardless of what some pretentious gringos liked to have claimed.

Re: Ajijic pronunciation redux
Just because Dane Chandos heard it that way , it does not mean it is correct. I would not use an American expat to learn how to say Ajijic ....just saying.

Redux was pronounced Re-dush, but now the x is silent (for those in the know)

We were talking to a Canadian in Tlaquepaque whose cousin owned a place he called Chaaaa-paala. Was that pronunciation because he could?

For some reason, Joco bothers me more than Guad does.
