We are heading back to Canada for the summer and will be taking our small dog (9 kilos) with us.
Any advice/suggestions would be appreciated. We will most likely fly American Airlines.
Thx in advance  Beer

In cabin only. Try to avoid the little Regional Jets out of Guad. Perhaps see if a vet could recommend a slight calming agent

9 KGs is right on the edge for being allowed in the cabin. Technically the dog (or cat) must be able to fit under the seat in front of you. The dog needs to fit into one on the "airline approved" soft carriers and have enough room to turn around in it. I am not sure how stringent they are on this but you might want to start with one of the carriers to see that your dog fits into it. Otherwise the dog will need to go in cargo and you will need an approved hard carrier.

Also the airlines only allow a limited number of dogs in the cabin (4, I believe) so you would want to book early. You can't usually do this on-line. You need to call the airline directly to arrange a cabin dog.

My dog is too large for cabin travel, so he will have to go as checked baggage.
Now I have to find the appropriate carrier for that.
Anyone know where to get them locally.  Beer

Caution: The airline won't accept it if it is too small (dog can't turn around) or too big (dog will get bounced around. Unfortunately, exactly what constitutes too big, I don't know. I guess the right answer is just large enough for the dog to be able to turn around.

Also, make sure there is a dish with water attached or they won't take it.

Thx everyone. Problem solved. Our neighbor has one and we have borrowed it.

I found this website that has lots of info about animal travel.

http://www.iata.org/whatwedo/cargo/live-animals/pets/Pages/index.aspx
It covers lots of details.  Beer

Also, be weary of when you are travelling. I believe there are restrictions during the summer because of the heat. You might wanna check with the airline about that as well.
And like CanuckBob said, reserve the space for the dog ahead of time or you might be outta luck.
Is the dog "Ozzy", formally "Noodles"?

Personally with the way some people behave on flights these days, I would rather give the dog my seat and I would volunteer to ride in the dog crate in relative peace and quiet!

Yes, I forgot about that heat restriction. I believe some of the airlines coming into or out of Mexico will not take pets in the cargo hold from May to September (or something like that) due to extreme high temps in the cargo holds. Be sure to check out the airlines policies on that. Some airlines may have temperature controlled cargo holds.

Yes, Ozzy is headed for the Great White North to meet Cutter and Willow and run free on our farm.
Someone else will have to tell him when it's time to come back to Mexico.  Beer

The holds are climate controlled, it's the heat on the tarmac while the luggage is being loaded and unloaded.

Good luck! Headed back to Belleville?

Don't forget to give him a couple of weeks at least of crate training. Start with him sleeping in it with the door open. Use treats.

I didn't check that website. Maybe it tells you all that.

Ah ok, we're the ones who fostered Ozzy right before you adopted him.
We'd love to see him before he flies north.
We're friends with some of your neighbours.

We are going back to the farm for the birth of our first grandchild.

Ozzy may just like it so much he may not want to come back to Mexico.
I, however, will be back before the snow falls.  Beer Beer

I dunno.  If Ozzie were my dog and I had friends who like him who might look after him while you're gone, I'd seriously think about leaving him home with them instead of what sounds like a doggie nightmare in traveling.  Being on a plane in a seat as a human is bad enough.
Just sayin'.
Blessings on having that first grandchild!

Have a good trip my friend....as you are heading north, I am heading east.
I'm sure your canine companion will be just fine, as he is as tough as his two legged travelling partner. Put a little black stuff in his watering bowl and he won't ever want the trip to end.  Maybe in both your bowls.    lol!

Thanks Dave. I will be stopping in at a pub in Pickering ON, called the Irish Times, to have a pint of the black stuff with my brother.
I will raise a glass for you too, and I am sure you will have one for me on the auld sod.
