Just wondering why

I wonder why when folks post for help, e.g. maid, gardener, doctor, etc. they use term such as, "honest and good." Usually in caps.  e.g. "I'm in need of an HONEST gardner.  If I'm seeking an employee of course honesty and integrity are important qualifications.  So are the ability to tend a garden of fruit trees, lawn, and decorative flowers as well as tend to the pool maintenance.  Or, a maid that can keep a 400 sq. mtr. house clean, do the ironing properly, etc..  I don't expect that anyone on this board will recommend dishonest or incompetent employees.  I could be wrong though.  I think it's better to spec what you need done by a prospective employee.  YMMV.  I'm really tired of; "I need an HONEST garderner, and "I need a GOOD doctor."  Your definition of HONEST and GOOD may not communicate much to a prospective source of information.  BTW, who doesn't want a GOOD doctor?

I agree, David. It is repulsive, as is the frequent request for directions to a clean and safe hotel or motel. In our decade plus in Mexico, I have never found a dirty one and we are still safe. Unfortunately, US motels and hotels are often filthy and home to questionable characters.

How about when someone asks directions, gets a reply, then says, "will I don't know the street names!"

You haven't encountered a dirty hotel in Mexico? You are fortunate.  I have also had a gun pulled on me by a person I caught ransacking an adjoining room. I guess I am less fortunate.

Ok, so I'm ignorant...Is there a translation post for the "codes" used on the forum? YMMV? I do know what BTW means...I'm getting there...

Nthensome: whenever you encounter one of the "codes" just put it in Google. They are usually so universal that the meanings pop right up. These first became popular with cell phone texters and migrated to web boards, emails and all social media.

David..If I wanted a doctor to treat my sore throat, I want a good doctor. If I need a brain tumor treated, I want a very GOOD doctor.

Regardless of what your affliction is you want a competent doctor.  If you want a brain tumor treated to need specialist, not a GOOD doctor.

Sadly, Nthensome, when it comes to doctors it is very difficult to make wise decisions. Even the worst doctor treats some people sufficiently or even well. Then they recommend that doctor as being "very good."
If you criticize a popular doctor who has insinuated himself into the community and made influential friends, you will find yourself in a world of hurt.
Then, there is just the different perspectives on how a case went. Doctors always have good explanations for the cases that go horribly wrong--explanations that involve no culpability on their part. Sometimes that is true and sometimes it is a cover up.
Some people are taken on an expensive but unnecessary ride by their trusted doctor through specialists, procedures and/surgeries and crow that the doctor "saved my life." In truth, their life was never at risk--just their bank account was.
In the end, you have to make your decision, pay your money and take your chances.

Being a specialist doesn't mean they are good

Ask your brain surgeon if they warranty their work....
