Can I legall drive one of these on a main highway?
I'm talking about going from Chapala Haciendas into Chapala and Ajijic.
I have a regular Mexican drivers license.
I know it has to be registered.
Do I need/Can I get insurance (liability/collision/theft)?
Thanks.

I don't know about insurance, but first I'd find out how fast it goes - maximum speed. If it is less than 60 kms an hour, it is a traffic hazard. It would do well on the Old Chapala Highway that goes from the Haciendas into town.

The first question that has to be asked and HAS TO BE ANSWERED is this:
Do you have a factura for the vehicle? All of your other answers lead from there. And everything else is a waste of time.

You need to get a plate for it and it is very expensive and no they will not insure them. Been there done that.

Factura not a problem; buying it new.
I will check on speed.
I don't know where the old Chapala highway is.
Will check all of the above.
Thanks, without this input, I could have made (another) expensive mistake.

You need plates.
ATV tires not suitable and in fact quite dangerous at high speeds on pavement.
Police could consider it unsafe in highway application and confiscate.

I'm quite sure this is considered a recreational vehicle and not suitable for street use (as per the sticker that is usually on it). As such you will not be able to get liability insurance for use on any public street or highway. Jalisco law states that you must have a minimum $3,000,000 pesos in liability insurance (other than street legal scooters under 150CC). While we see Mexican's driving them all over the place you had better be prepared to spend some time in a Mexican prison (or pay some HUGE mordida) if you hurt someone.

Have you made prior arrangements for cremation?
Have you considered that a fender-bender will cause you jail time?
Have you considered a small car instead? Something legal? Insurable?
Have you asked yourself, “Why?“
Oh, you must be a single, unattached orphan with no friends.
Go out the backside of Chapala Haciendas and turn right. The road will take you into Chapala.

I agree w/the points made and will pass.
The "Why" was it looks like fun.
Anyway, I guess my Safari will have to do.
Cremation orders in place for many years.
Yes, single, no family and few friends.
Thanks all.

Now I am jealous. I always wanted a Safari Thing and even considered towing one north with us.
Stay safe.

Re: Can I legall drive one of these on a main highway?
I've seen many 4-wheel ATVs around town in Chapala but never on the highway to Guadalajara.
Definitely need plates - our ranch manager drove ours into Chapala a few weeks ago to get new tires put on it, and he was stopped by a policeman for not having license plates. He paid a 200 peso mordida.
Sometimes you are required to have a helmet.
Both of these requirements seem to be more honored in the breach than in the actuality. Good income source for cops, I guess.

I wonder if I could rent one for a week to get the feel of it (and maybe get the urge to lower).
Anyone want to rent me one for $750.00 for a week?
Maybe S&S Auto?
