sometimes Mexicans do contribute
Report from Harry B:
After reporting the dangers at the Ajijic malecon playground equipment to town councilman Carlos Soto, nothing was done. Delegado Hector Espana sent written requests to Chapala and nothing was done. Hector revealed the need in the papers and nothing was done. Now, the workers at the El Tempesque Herreria are stepping up and fixing what they can. If you have iron work to do, these men are the best and their prices are excellent. Please show the community's appreciation by considering them for any iron work you need done. And, please mention your appreciation for their work on the playground equipment. They are located in west Ajijic on the carretera across from El Sarape restaurant and the new liquor store.
On a second front, Oral surgeon at the free dental clinic, Dr Miguel, has paid over 20,000 pesos for materials, donated over 40 sets of braces and made many bridges and dentures out of his own pocket. Recently, the mexican community stepped up and held a soccer match and raised 4500 pesos for Dr. Miguel. He was moved to tears by the gesture!

Re: sometimes Mexicans do contribute
The title of my post was misleading. The point was intended to be that "some people" here complain that the community depends more on expat support for charitable activities than for support by non-expats, and these are two among numerous instances that proved the complaint wrong.

Re: sometimes Mexicans do contribute
This morning, 62 'brigadistas' from Jalisco left for the city of Edmonton to assist in fighting fires in the province of Alberta. The firefighters who are going to Canada are trained with international protocols.
Alberta and Jalisco are "sister states" and close collaborators.
Many thanks to Jalisco for their great support!

this info re: alberta/jalisco relations is from 2005 but it'll give ya an idea.
chapala has been twinned with 2 alberta municipalities since 2006. mazatlan has had a relationship with grand prairie for a lotta years.

Re: sometimes Mexicans do contribute
Sometimes people, expats or Mexicans need to be proactive, cut through the red-tape and just do it.
As a very small example; my street in Chapala Haciendas always flooded when it rained. So rather than go through the BOD, I simply ordered out a few trucks of gravel and had my worker spread it out.
When I figured out we needed a street light since "we" (four houses on a horseshoe "street") for safety purposes, again, I just did it myself and hooked the electricity into my house. So for a relatively few pesos, we have the safety of a street light.
DIY rules.
