Humming Bird Feeder

On this forum about 4 years ago, there was some discussion about humming bird feeders and what kind to get to avoid use by bats. Someone mentioned the "new" bird supply place in Riberas del Pilar.

Can anybody give me the name of the place and it's approximate location?

Bats are good, they eat mosquitoes. If you can't find the one you are looking for, you could just buy the regular kind and take it in at night.

Speaking as a bat, I resemble that remark.

I don't know of any that don't also attract bats, just bring the feeder in at night. You can find feeders at most of the local pet stores. My personal favorite is the HummZinger but you have to get it on Amazon.

The Veterinary store on Constitution just east of Colon has Humming Bird feeders for sale.

They don’t claim to not attract bats, just prevent the bats from feeding on the sugar water. I would just put in more plants that attract and feed the hummers. I don’t do it because I have three cats. Oneof whom has mad hunting skills. It would be like setting up a buffet for him.

I found a nice feeder for $23mx at the Garden Center next to 7-11 in Riberas. Thanks for all your help.

BTW, they have a nice selection of seeds and all kinds of pots from functional to decorative.

For making the hummers happy, plant a flowering vine. Bogies work. We have several and often see the hummers dining. It's not true that they only like certain colors. Between that and a three tiered spa flowing daily, we have great bird watching. (No cats here). For bats, we keep a light on so they'll visit elsewhere.

The bats are fascinating to watch on the humming bird feeders at dusk but unfortunately they make such a terrible mess on the terrace that we take the feeders down every night. Right now, in December, the bats are few and far between in the evening...

Does anybody here know if diseases can be passed between the hummingbirds and the bats? Are the natural food sources shared by both?

Mostly we have fruit bats and they eat fruit rather than flower nectar.

"Just leave the light on" solves the bat problem. The birds are day feeders.
