Looking for an oriole feeder
Lots of selection of hummingbird feeders, especially at the new place in Riberas, but my oriole feeder is leaking badly and I can't seem to find one of those. Have you actually seen them for sale here?

Re: Looking for an oriole feeder
Didn't know there was a specific feeder for orioles. If you mean seed, I took one into Tom's Chapala Bazaar to sell and it was still there a few days ago. It was barely used and it's not expensive.

Lol, thanks. No, this is a liquid feeder, looks like a BIG hummer feeder. Bigger drinking holes for this larger bird, and more perching space.

Thanks, I didn't think they were seed eaters, thought fruit eaters. . .

As far as I know, they are fruit eaters, among other things. So they'll eat oranges, jam, and also insects.

So, you make a nectar for them? Or buy it? I'd love to attract them too, there are a few in the neighborhood.

Yes, a nectar: a mix of jarabe and water. Lots of disagreement over this topic: whether or not the colouring in red jarabe causes harm; that feeding them this way makes them fat and lazy; or how much syrup to water is good, etc... but of course Google is your friend here.

HG, I have a friend whose daughter is a biologist and calls hummingbird feeders crack houses. Lots of controversy. Sounds like h'bird nectar. . .
Spot, you can buy wild bird seed almost everywhere here. From abarrotes and the Animal Store to SL. Pet stores for parrot and other birdseed.

You don't need to add coloring to the nectar, the birds are already attracted by the colors of the feeder.

As I said, lots of controversy over this topic.
Yes, it is the same mix as hummingbird booze. Many people buy the red grenadine, and viajero is right, it's not needed for its colour, but when I started this, for example, I already had red grenadine in my cupboard for mixing drinks for hooman beens.

Well, maybe we should take it to the Octagon.HelperGuy wrote:As I said, lots of controversy over this topic.
If you can't find a new feeder you might be able to fix the leak with a little silicone.

Glue guns fix everything but a broken heart or a cracked head.
I'm on the side of planting a vine and letting the little hummers graze away. We've got them spoiled on flowers and a three tiered bird spa fountain. What's our reward? Some nice visuals, and Bird Poo .

We have the little devils bathing in our pool every morning. They actually dive right under. I had never seem them do this before.

You can buy hummingbird food if you are worried about the sugar and water
mixture. I had to quit feeding them after I was blessed with three kittens
thrown over the wall. Hummingbird would last about five minutes in my
yard because of the cats. Time for bells on the cats I guess.

The trouble is, the leak is all around where the liquid tank base screws into the "seating area", so if I glued I'd never be able to get them apart again to refill.

Well you live about a block from the Hummingbird lady and the neighborhood has a large number of very large trees. Both of these things help
make your neck of the woods to be Hummingbird city. Where the big trees are gone one has far fewer of the little fellows like up here on
Zaragoza. Not many hummers here compared to where you are. When I lived near the beautiful brick house near you I had them calling me
in the morning to get up and put the feeders out. Leave the feeders out to see the bats at night but lay some plastic down as it gets sticky
as the bats eat by flying and tipping it over and it spills. Very sticky situation. Believe it or not if you have a post next to a feeder a foot away
from the post you can lean on the post and watch them eat from inches away. Takes a little time and patience. Take a drink with you and
wear some glasses as you will have them within an inch of your head once they understand you. I am blessed with cats now so I do miss the
time I use to spend with the hummers down by the lake.

Re: Looking for an oriole feeder
Our orioles have pried off the little flowers around the holes in the hummingbird feeders. Now they can feed happily. Clever little critters.

I don't know how often you fill your feeder so this may be an aggravation...try plumbers tape.
I love hummingbirds...saucy little piggies that aren't at all shy about letting you know the feeder's empty.

Re: Looking for an oriole feeder
I'd probably go through a roll of tape a week, unfortunately. And the hummers will buzz your head if you let them go too long without sustenance; even had one who would come up the bedroom window and just hang there until I noticed.

Re: Looking for an oriole feeder
We don't seem to need special feeders... we have Orioles coming to the Hummingbird feeders and drinking from there. Same when we lived back in Kansas City. Haven't tried it since moving here, but in KC we cut oranges in half and hung them various places. The Orioles loved them and would strip them bare. Mockingbirds, too. Found it helpful to run a string through the orange and tie it someplace, or they would end up on the ground from the birds pulling at them.

Yeah, I'm looking for the same thing as I have two large Tom's that love to feed on orioles, but it is hard to attract the orioles without the proper feeder. They call it "phishing", instead of birding.
I'm already aware that this post is not "pc".
