Re: The honeymoon is over.
The focus of my O.P. was that by whoever done, the bite is back in swing here, or at least starting.
No, he never directly asked for money. He said the fine for no smog cert. was $1080 (not true). He said my car could be towed (not true).
The most telling thing is when I said just give me the ticket, he asked, "Do you really want to pay in Chapala?"
I said yes, gave me papers and said to get the certificate.
End of story/thread.

Re: The honeymoon is over.
I was stopped by a State transito and he gave me a warning with so many days to get a sticker I got a sticker and that was the end of the storey.. If a transito threatens you tell him to go to hell. That is what I do and it works as well.

It never went "out of swing". Congratulations on leaving the house.

I bet when a cop gets assigned to Lakeside he immediately buys a new iPhone for his daughter, a motorbike for his son, and new furnishings for the house .. that's before he even goes on his first shift.
If ever you want to know more about the mordida system read up on the colonization of Mexico. That's when it started and you might come to learn why it will always exist. And if by chance it did fizzle out it won't be because some Gringos tripped it up.

All cops?....just a few?....a cop? Hard to win a bet that can´t determine the the final score any better than that.
So without concrete data, who cares? I know I don´t.

I think I get the idea of what is being said.
I recall, " Power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely." Said by:The first Lord Acton.
So you take several parts of poorly paid police, add many intimidatebale Gringos, many with at lease a moderate amount of money, and you have a recipe for corruption.
It's that simple.

People have a hard time fighting corrupt authority in their own back yard. Put them in a strange environment and they wilt even faster. Most aren´t even a viable threat to even the dumbest cops that work for Vialidad.

Lest anyone thinks transitos are choir boys and above getting propina'd for a traffic stop pass, let me remind you of the post made by a woman who moved back to the states when her husband died . . . She wrote about accidentally walking in on them in Riberas where they were all sitting around a table on the patio cutting up the day's pie.
Which reminds me, RIP Alberto.

Policía Federal - Oficial MXN $14,702 México
Let's assume the feds are the best paid. But is it enough? Is it ever enough?
La Policía de Tránsito y Vialidad Metropolitana labora dos turnos diariamente, de 6:30AM a 3:00PM y de 1:30PM a 9:00PM.
72,000 a year. 6,000 a month.
If not for the mordidas how many patrol cars would you see on the roads?
Do you notice that lap of shifts? From 1:30 to 3:00 there are twice as many cops on the roads. Good time to stay home.

Every local I've asked says there are honest cops. I have come across a few. What I don't know is their state of mind at the time. Maybe I reminded them of their grandfathers and they gave me a break. Far from defining them as honest but it's good to be positive. I'm guessin not all of them are cap-strapped. Or they have pet peeves that ignite from time to time and stick it to um.

Reading the history of the Olmec civilization, if you had to wait in a long line to pay your dues or anything else and didn't want the bother. Just bring the jefe a chicken and go to the front of the line. It's been that way ever since.

"Anonymous" was the operative word in that sentence, cypress. That said, I still would never report them. Report them to who? Their commandante? That'll be effective. . .

You know how at times in history the invaders (Spanish) will have a custom or symbol that the vanquished see as acceptable or even reverent. The Spanish had the cross they also sent magistrates to the new land, they were not salaried. They had to fend for themselves by way of a mordida system. Looks like a perfect match (Olmec tradition). Presenting a chicken evolved into presenting anything of value.
Back about 25 years as I went to the GDL INM for my yearly report (happened to be around Christmas time) I couldn't believe my eyes, about 10 people sitting there with those gift-wrapped liquor bottles of the best there is for sipping. I assume it all looked a little ugly. So - excuse me I need a tissue to dry my laughing eyes - they sent one of the secretaries out in the crowd to collect the bottles, seems reasonable. About half those people didn't want to give it up. I assume they wanted their face and name connected with the gift. Blatant, no shame at all!
PS Never ever report any official for being asked for a mordida. You'll come out the looser.

That small tease over "looser" shouldn't have offended anyone, but the response was almost unbelievable in its level of venom. You probably aren't the only one who thought it was funny, but didn't respond because of the nature of the poster.
