It's a nickname for Guadalajara, or in this case, Guadalajarans. And yes, there is a lot of eye candy in that city.
I thought people from Guadalajara were known as 'tapatios'?

I thought so too. And it makes more sense that Guanatos would be people from Guanajuato. Dunno

Until that post by "guest" I'd only heard of Guanatos as a nickname for the city of Guadalajara, not the people. But it's obvious what's meant by the context of what was posted.

(Was that you Jonnyintrouble/San Fran? Punted after one post?

Of course, Tapatio is a nickname for people from Guadalajara. Until recently I thought it was exclusive to Guadalajarans, but in the last couple of years I've been told by at least 4 or so Mexicans that Tapatio is not limited to Guadalajarans, but refers to anybody who was born in Jalisco. I don't know if that's true or not. If not, are Jaliscans who aren't from Guadalajara resentful, and appropriating the word since Guadalajarans enjoy some special status?

Since I'm sure everyone is dying for a followup...

Like I said, I've only ever heard "Guanatos" used as a nickname for the City of Guadalajara, never the people who live there. This morning, my physical therapist confirmed this. He's 27 years old, and I admit I've only ever heard "Guanatos" used as slang among younger Mexicans.
Also, according to him, "Tapatio" is reserved for only those born in Guadalajara, not just anybody from Jaliso.
(But then, he's a Chilango and everyone knows they can't be trusted.

So what did you underestimate before moving Full Time to Mexico?

A Mexican friend, who passed this story from his father, that Tapatio was actually a derogatory term for many years. It comes from a time when there were rampant pick pocket gangs in the city. These gangs were headed by adults who taught young people this trade. When the "troops" returned their masters they turned over their spoils for safekeeping. They didn't want the pick pockets to be searched it detained, giving up the valuables. The crews had a special call - tapa - to notify their leaders, uncles, - tios - that had some goods to handover.

I need the "Ejection Seat" emoji. He really needs to get a VPN and change his style if he really wants to be back on here. I have adjusted the settings so every new member needs my approval. He won't get past that point with some real creativity.
